LWV sponsors free moderator workshop

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

The League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson will hold a free moderator training
workshop from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., on Sat. April 30 at the Sam Lena-South Tucson Branch
Library to assist organizations in how to hold workshops.

Sam Lena-South Tucson Branch Library is at 1607 S. 6th Avenue (south of E. 22nd Street).

Light refreshments will be served. Deadline for reservations for the workshop is April 27.

To make a reservation, please call (520) 740-5779 or (520) 622-0905.

“All workshop attendees will learn how to set the tone of the forum as
moderator,” said Victor Bowleg, Voter Services chairman for the League of Women
Voters of Greater Tucson. “Characteristics of a moderator include neutrality,
authority, confidence, spontaneity, knowledge and understanding,” said Sally
Davenport, an active Voter Services member.

“Every forum/debate needs a moderator, someone who is responsible for making the
format work as intended,” Bowleg said. “A moderator is a traffic cop. In order
to keep things going smoothly, the moderator must follow the rules set down –
either with a light hand and humor – or by being tough since forum rules dictate
fairness.”

“The League has been asked to promote civility and security in its own sessions
and to help organizations do the same.” Bowleg said. “This includes showing
respect of different opinions, avoiding inflammatory rhetoric, speaking out
against violence, prejudice and incivility in all forums when it occurs.”

Each participant will have a Moderator Checklist including setting up the room,
starting the forum, questions and timing, closing statements of candidates or
panelists. Following the checklist will be role-playing of moderating,
discussion and a short break and workshop evaluation. Each participant will be
given a packet outlining the above.
