Eight Republican Congressmembers voted for the DREAM ACT

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

The DREAM ACT passed the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday on a close 216-198 vote, with 20 members not voting. This act would permit young people brought illegally into the U.S. by their parents the opportunity for U.S. citizenship. However, that path would still be contingent on them completing two years of college or military service.

Who were the lone 8 brave Republicans who voted for it? Here’s the list and their states, with Congressional Districts numbers, including freshman Rep. Charles Djou from Honolulu, Hawaii (my home state):

Anh Cao (LA – 2)
Michael Castle (DE – 1)
Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL – 21)
Mario Diaz- Balart (FL -25)
Charles Djou (HI – 1)
Vernon Ehlers (MI – 3)
Bob Inglis (SC – 4)
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Fl – 18)

Republican Djou just lost the General Election in Hawaii to Democrat Colleen Hanabusa (State Senator). He won a special election for this District 1 seat in May, 2010 in a 3 way run off with Hanabusa and former District 2 Congressman Ed Case.

Congressman Charles Djou (HI-1)

Djou is Chinese-American though he has a French sounding last name. Congresswoman (HI -2) Mazie Hirono (Japanese-American) also voted in favor of the DREAM ACT, as did our Southern Arizona Reps. Raul Grijalva (Mexican-American) and Gabielle Giffords in CD 7 and CD 8 respectively. Hanabusa, the incoming Hawaiian Congressmember in CD 1 is also Japanese-American.

The U. S. Senate (100 members) is now scheduled to take up the measure soon.
