“Votes for Women: Right or Wrong?” play on October 16

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Presented by the Arizona Women’s Heritage Trail, www.womensheritagetrail.org:

The Arizona Women’s Heritage Trail was launched in the early fall of 2005 through a coalition of Arizona historical agencies and women’s organizations. Soon thereafter a unique collaboration was formed with the Arizona State University Institute for Humanities Research of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Through this community outreach collaboration, the Arizona State University Foundation provides fiscal services and shares its tax exempt status with the Arizona Women’s Heritage Trail. The Arizona Women’s Heritage Trail, designated a legacy program by the Arizona State Centennial Commission, actively involves the community, universities, and schools through its outreach while providing an opportunity to represent the state’s multicultural heritage.

The fight to gain suffrage for women in America was a long battle back in 1912 to 1920 when the 19th Amendment was passed, but today many women take this ability to vote for granted. I was at Woods branch library a few months ago, and I heard a mother tell her teenaged daughter that they didn’t need to “bother” with the voter registration information booth outside the library. It was heartbreaking for me to hear that. Although many women do register to vote, lots do not exercise their right to vote. Please attend this play/discussion to find out more about the history of women’s suffrage and why you should vote, esp. in this year’s Presidential election.
