The pitfalls of political correctness

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

As many analysts have noted, political correctness has insinuated itself into the mainstream of our current administration’s operational process. For example, analysis of the murders at Fort Hood were rationalized by referring to the assailant, Maj. Nidal Hasan, as a deranged individual rather than a radical Muslim intent on killing as many infidels as possible.

Granted, not all Muslims are intent on violence, but tracing the history of the last few decades confirms that most of the premeditated violence can be attributed to Muslims who rely on Koranic verses and Sharia law to justify sanguinic (violent, murderous) action. Political correctness (e.g., the disregarding of common sense) will lead to additional deadly acts.

Had someone in authority at Fort Hood raised concerns about the Muslim psychiatrist, he would have been brought up on charges and opportunity for promotion would have been thwarted. Radical Islamic beliefs and open assertions as such should have been a clue.

During the Cold War, President Reagan was ridiculed for calling the Soviet Union “an evil empire.” The proponents of political correctness said his claim was undiplomatic, likely to offend, and would ruin our world reputation. Since when is being popular as a nation a global competition? Reagan defied his detractors realizing that the truth is a powerful antidote to political correctness.

Unfortunately, times have changed. Today many high school and college students have been influenced by radical leftist instructors with the belief that tolerance for all groups must prevail despite the potential danger contrived by the right wing conservatives. Conversely, extreme  right wingnuts are peddling their own form of fear and panacea using various religious platforms. But we’ve evolved to a point when unwavering adherence to political correctness collides with common sense.

The CIA now admits awareness of Maj. Hasan’s attempts to contact al Qaeda and his radical mindset, but they were concerned that acting on this knowledge could cause difficulties for openly Muslim soldiers. Therefore, the safety and welfare of military personnel was consciously put at risk to avoid offending Muslims in the military. That sure worked out well.

Proponents of political correctness are feeling empowered by such actions as those by the CIA. These people are more concerned about offending members of self-professed victim groups (e.g., Muslims), rather than focusing on the universal welfare and security of our country. What’s more frightening is that these political correctness radicals are entrenched in every crevice of societal life from high schools and universities to large corporations and worldwide military installations. This is a frightening situation that Americans have allowed to spread over the years for fear of being negatively labeled and openly persecuted. The go along and get along mentality has now begun to regularly bite us in the butt.

Our national survival appears to be in peril due to the misguided political correctness mantra running rampant throughout the administration and in the most radical left and right wing groups. Political correctness is blinding us with regard to a comprehensive understanding and identification of our enemy, the one that is right under our noses.

Political correctness, a form of societal fear, can be defined in a variety of ways. One of the most accurate declares particular topics, expressions, and gestures off-limits. In effect, it has morphed into an undeclared form of censorship. Political correctness has evolved into a state of fear thwarting the candid expression of truth. People are afraid to communicate their true thoughts or beliefs for fear of offending others and being ostracized and labeled as hypocrites.

Political correctness is dangerous and inappropriate when viewed in a rational context. Allowing political correctness to guide and dominate our interactions with others, then we are no longer communicating with them in an honest and open manner. Effectually, political correctness insults the other person’s inherent belief that he or she is receiving a candid, honest message. The politically correct conveyor is assuming that the recipient can’t deal with the truth, so it must be sanitized prior to delivery.

The consequence of political correctness that is adopted throughout a society is a nation of fearful, timid people who have accepted a position of relegated passivity without a true voice. Breaking free requires courage on a nationwide front, one such as that being pursued by the Tea Party movement comprised of people from all walks of life and all political affiliations. We can only hope this initiative gains momentum as the truth continues to emerge and Americans become more aware of the pursuant erosion of their personal freedom by many of those who were elected to represent them with transparency, honesty, and openness.
