President Obama and his family will spend the holidays in a private beach-front residence on Kailua, Oahu, for their vacation. Rental costs are $3,500 a day or $75,000 a month according to national travel guides. In fairness, the Obama’s are paying for the rental costs, but that’s it.
Taxpayers will be supplementing an estimated $1 million for additional security and lavish accommodations for the president’s entourage and transportation. This cost is based on estimates from various Hawaiian media outlets.
For instance, the Hawaii Reporter figured the taxpayer bill last year for one Obama vacation in Hawaii to be nearly $1.5 million. He and his family have spent an estimated $6 million dollars on Hawaiian vacations since taking office.
I hope the family can get comfortable in the 7,000-square-foot rental that sports five bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms, a media room with surround sound, a kitchen created for a master chef, a dining room and great room, a private lagoon-style pool with tropical waterfalls and a lavish island spa with panoramic views of Kailua Bay and Mount Olomana. Not a bad spot to escape the real world.
Hawaii is also on the financial hook; the Honolulu Police Department forked over $228,247 for the president’s most recent visit, according to the Hawaii Reporter, which noted that city taxpayers have never been reimbursed for $350,000 they spent on police overtime for Obama trips during his former campaign trips.
Add to the bill another $1 million dollars for flying Air Force One to Hawaii, and another $140,000 dollars for each U.S. Air Force C-17 cargo aircraft required for transporting presidential limos, helicopters and an array of support equipment, according to the Hawaii Reporter.
We aren’t finished adding to the tab. The Secret Service and Navy SEALs rented a total of six beachfront homes during the president’s 2010 Christmas vacation for between $1,000 and $1,250 a day. Coast Guard personnel also patrol the beach in front of the vacation spot 24/7 with 30-foot speedboats mounted with high-powered firearms along with two smaller boats.
There’s more; approximately two dozen Obama staffers stayed at the Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort & Spa, on Waikiki Beach last year that costs $350-$450 per night.
Obama promised 300 supporters during his November visit/fund raiser to Hawaii that he would return “shortly” with his family. “It is great to be home, great to feel that Aloha spirit. And Michelle and the girls will be back shortly for Christmas vacation, as we do every year,” he said at that time.
Good to know that everything is in order in Washington to the point that the president can get away for the holidays, unlike the millions of Americans that remain out of work and are struggling to make ends meet from day to day….
