Twilight of The American Empire

If anything can be said to characterize this period in the history of the American Empire it is the faint sweet smell of decay, the aroma of something barely nosed out behind the curtains of our public and private lives. It is the way an Empire in decline begins to smell.

As a people we have become spiritually feverish and anxious, only dimly aware (if at all) that we are sick yet, somehow, responding to that half-sensed odor by questing after distraction and emotional excitation. Thus we hide ourselves from the truth.

Americans have never been a particularly introspective people; our thought has always been directed outward, toward the world. We have been engineers, pragmatists. According to the the myths we employ to understand others it is the French to whom we attribute the inward turning of thought: Think Descartes.

When I look about today I can’t help but think of Rome: Bread…circuses… and Caesar’s royal circlet sold to the highest bidder; political destinies sold to the corn merchants.

Some weeks a go a friend looked up from his coffee and after a pause in our conversation said, “There is no honor any more.” Then just a few nights ago someone looked up and asked, “Don’t we care about facts anymore?”

If there is a public life without honor, then action in public life is without limits; and in a public discussion in which facts are less important than emotions, anything you say with conviction becomes true—and chaos ensues.

  • Jonathan DuHamel

The malaise of the country perhaps has to do with lack of leadership and the expectation of entitlement. “I think we have more machinery of government than is necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the industrious.” –Thomas Jefferson
We apparently don’t care about facts any more. Why else would so many of our leaders fall under the thrall of the phantom menace of the carbon cult and pretend that we can and should do something about climate change?

    • tiponeill

And yet not only have only OUR leaders fallen under this thrall, but all of the scientific community worldwide with so very few who seem immune.
To what do you attribute your immunity ? Superior intelligence ? Aluminum foil ?

I look forward to the Global Warming treaty. It will , by its very obvious wording usurp our constitution and put control under a U.N. world government. With any luck it will incite, along with other upcoming neo-socialist programs, a very violent rebellion.

Why is this appealing to me? It will settle the issues of who and what is going to run this nation. A good cleansing is needed ……… and upcoming.

        • leftfield

Still on the black helicopters and blue helmets, mopckoe?

          • mорское

            why not ………..

      • mорское

btw tippy ……… a while back the world’s scientific circle blieved the world to be flat. They were supported at that time by the world’s leaders. It was taught and enforced, even at times by threat of death.

        flat world ………. a lie
        global warming …… a lie

“btw tippy ……… a while back the world’s scientific circle blieved the world to be flat. They were supported at that time by the world’s leaders. It was taught and enforced, even at times by threat of death.”
If you believe that is true it is no wonder that you can’t judge what scientists say about climate change.
You must get your “facts” from fundie email exchanges – the truth is that “scientists” have know that the earth was spherical as far back as we can trace “science”.
Eratosthenes measured the Earth’s circumference hundreds of years before christ.

          • mорское

and tippy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth and you use wikipedia as your source of “scientific” fact.

i referred to ancient Babylon, Ancient Egypt, pre-Classical Greece and pre-17th century China.

the point was that science has been wrong so many times that to state that global warming and its supposed future impacts are correct is ludicrous.  “If you believe that is true it is no wonder that you can’t judge what scientists say about climate change.” and you swallow it hook, line and sinker. hollywood story line.  point is tippy, out of global warming lies will come a “new” order to “protect us” from ourselves. for our own good. for the well being of the world , i.e.. the fatherland concept.  i await the onslaught ………

No empire lasts forever and we shouldn’t expect ours to. That said, we have had a pretty good run and we may be on the down side but I think we still have at least a couple of generations to go as a first rank power.

  • radmax

I agree with Mr. DuHamel, that the prevailing mentality of entitlement will be our downfall. It seems there are many who would just go with the flow when it comes down to crunch time. It’s crunch time, and the flow is headed down the drain. This series of problems have all been dealt with successfully in the past, although I believe that the leadership and guts to make hard, unpopular decisions may be nonexistent in this day and age. Way too many toes to get stepped upon these days, the whining is endless.
Two wars we cannot afford. Aid to countries that could give a rats patute about us, seemingly endless government waste; federal, state and local. Two of the best ideas to come along in a while, the govt. subsidies of first time home buyers and the car rebates-too expensive?
And now it looks as if health care reform will be nothing of the sort.
    With no leadership-we ARE doomed.

    • leftfield

Entitlements seem to be for you what capitalism is for me.  Exactly what are you referring to when you speak of entitlements, Rad?  Are we talking about social security benefits, unemployment benefits and the like; direct payments to citizens; or something else?

  • Mike

Wow! Not enough room to really express my agreement.  First, greed isn’t good.  We’re in this together.  I can take some entitlement abuse if we take care of those who need it.
Second, why do we spend  billions being the most imperialistic power in the world.  We have garrisons of troops on foreign soil all over the place.  Seems like we were really bent when the USSR did that (especially in Cuba).  That results in an immense defnese budget.
Third, what happened to our sense of humor?  We do funny stuff at times and sometimes not on purpose.  Lighten up.
Fourth, lobbyists run the country.  Is that the way we want it?
Last, okay – we have a capitalistic-democracy.  Is this what we want?
    one man’s opinion

  • mорское

We are losing our position in the world due to self castration.

No courage to do what is required to maintain military and financial superiority in the world.

A lack of resolve and determination …….. 60-70% of Americans want it handed to them on a silver patter and never take responsibility for anything.

We are working hard to self destruct ……… may God speed.

    • mорское

“on a silver patter” should read silver platter.

    • leftfield

You could always move to China, mopckoe.  It seems they plan to be the next empire with “military and financial superiority.

      • mорское

they will never hold it together.

i’ll stick around here casue i have a feeling the fun is just getting ready to start.

  • tiponeill

“point is tippy, out of global warming lies will come a “new” order to “protect us” from ourselves. for our own good. for the well being of the world , i.e.. the fatherland concept.  i await the onslaught ………”
Aww – you’ve discovered our secret plan for world domination. We thought that putting fluoride in your water and poisoning your vital essences would have made you more docile.
It doesn’t matter though – the Rothschilds and Tri-lateral commission and the Masons have secretly seized control of the internets and no one will believe you.
We are unstoppable – resistance is futile.

  • Mariana

Do we have to maintain military and financial superiority in the world? Why?
