A Change of Command at The Giffords Campaign

by on Jul. 11, 2010, under Politics

Update July 14

Mr. Graver, who is leaving the Giffords Campaign to attend law school, was the operations manager of the Giffords campaign office and not the campaign manager. There was no campaign manager until McLeod took office.

Heard on the street:

Rodd McLeod, who was the campaign manager of Giffords’ first congressional campaign, will be returning to take command of this year’s campaign. He’s replacing Daniel Graver, who is leaving to attend law school.

Giffords is running for a third term as Congresswoman, representing Congressional District 8.

McLeod, who had been serving as Terry Goddard’s campaign director has been replaced by Jan Lesher.

While at “Second Saturday” downtown Dataport ran into a crowd at Hotel Congress attending a campaign event for John Dougherty, who’s running for the Democratic nomination for US Senator. What was interesting was that the Dougherty event was filled with a lot of long time Democratic Party activists.

That race seems to have boiled down to Glassman vs Dougherty.

Yes, I’ve been getting a steady stream of emails about supporting  John Dougherty.  I think people admire his openness, and steadfast courage since he took on Fife Symington and Joe Arpaio.  Glassman had an early start on this U.S. Senate race, but lots of Phoenicians and many Tucson Democratic loyalists are buzzing about  investigative reporter Dougherty.

  • Stacy H.

When every other leader in this state turned a blind eye to teenage girls being forced to “spiritually marry” old men in the FLDS community, John Dougherty didn’t. He took a stand, and that resulted in the arrests of people complicit in child abuse.
I feel that John will fight for the voiceless and ignored if elected, and Arizona is so overdue for that.

Barack Obama’s support of indefensible spying legislation that continues to harm national security (the FISA Amendments Act of 2008) ensured that I could not, in good conscience, contribute to his campaign. I voted for him anyway, the whole baby, bathwater and all thing.
I have not contributed to a political candidate since giving money to the DNC in support of John Kerry in 2004.
I just contributed to John Dougherty.
I am the son of an investigative journalist, and I also happen to have seen power up close and evil.
Ironically, what passes for journalism is in a worse state today than when Father Coughlin issued his anti-Semitic radio rants in the 20s. And the politicians respond to the corporate-molded reality, because the same people fund their campaigns.
I believe in my heart Barack Obama is a good man, but he has done the same thing. There was no empirical basis whatsoever for concluding that oil drilling technology was safe. He should have consulted John Holdren (instead of Robert Gibbs) before opening his mouth.
While I’m suitably impressed by Rodney Glassman’s education, he seems like one of those guys who runs for office to run for office.  I don’t trust him.
America needs an investigative reporter on the inside, and it’s about time John McCain addresses reality.
P.S. Regarding “Zippy the Pinhead” — shout out to fellow intellectual Bill Griffith (I have no affiliation, just admiration)

Like it was said here, Glassman never held a job and comes off too slick. We don’t need another Israel Cheerleader that will send Israel $3 BILLION DOLLARS a year in Aid while this country suffers one of the worst Recessions in history.

Dougherty talks like a newspaper guy, smart, factual and no BS.

  • Francine Shacter

Myself, I support Glassman. I think investigative journalists are great but for an elected official, I give a lot of weight to having run for, been elected to and served on the Tucson City Council. While the Tucson City Council is  not the Senate of the United States, it is valuable experience. In addition, he has a PhD in arid lands – a subject of considerable importance, especially in watershort Arizona, and a JD.  For me, this makes him the candidate to support.

    • steve

      Gosh, Francine… what’s Rodney’s vision?  What are Rodney’s accomplishments?
Holding one’s own in the US Senate, a deliberative body of 100 members takes far more than a couple of graduate degrees with little to no genuine, tangible  accomplishment for the people of Tucson.

Cathy Eden seems to be the only one with a realistic take and plans for the issues facing Arizona. We don’t need more men who talk about nothing, do nothing and stand for nothing. Let’s elect a do’er-Cathy Eden!!

    • steve

Are you serious?  Did you even see Eden’s performance in the debate last Friday?  You really should watch it.  She’s done.  http://www.azfamily.com
And frankly speaking, John Dougherty has done more for the people of Arizona than all three of the other candidates combined.
Eden’s got serious baggage in that she’s been a shill for Big Pharma and has done major damage to working Arizonans in her associations with Rural Metro.  The information is out there for a reporter with any serious degree of curiousity and persistence to find.

Yes, Arizonans do know John McCain. That’s exactly why we Zonies are voting for John Dougherty .
McCain was Senator when the government ran  a budget surplus and he did nothing to stop the NEOCONS when it went into a record deficit even before the current financial crisis – the worst since the Great Depression. Should we continue with his bad judgement and policies?

One definition of madness is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result.
Yes, John Dougherty has less national experience, but he has demonstrated strong leadership ability, intelligence and common sense. His position on issues such as education, health care and Social Security reflect his concern for the American people on Main Street not just McCain’s friends on Wall Street.

It does not matter who Terry Goddard uses as a campaign manager because he has a credibility problem.
