As a registered Independent I continue to get campaign pitches from Republicans. The most recent was a call from Jon Kyl urging me to vote for Jonathan Paton and assuring me that Paton would vote to repeal “Obama Care.”
Repealing health care reform is one of the two really bad ideas being pushed by Paton and Kelly, two Republicans who want to unseat Giffords in CD8. The other really bad idea is “privatizing” Social Security.
What is it with Republican conservatives that makes them attack the nation’s social safety nets? It seems to be an irresistible urge.
In this case, why would I want to return to the era of “pre-existing conditions” as a ground for refusing insurance? And the donut hole in medication coverage? Yeah, I really want to go back to that. What’s wrong with extending health insurance to millions who were not covered before?
Health care reform is moving slowly toward its intended objectives, but at least it is moving. Am I enchanted with health care reform as it now stands? Certainly not, and neither was a vast majority of our citizens who really wanted a single payer option; but I don’t want to repeal what we have, and I would rise from my death bed to vote against any candidate who does.
