Are Conservative Candidates Too Dumb to Debate?

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

The Data Port is going on hiatus until the middle of October, to work on other writing projects.

The Data Port gang has recently returned from a sidecar exploration of SE New Mexico, which in addition to being God’s country, is apparently also the Lord’s. The folks are very big on yard signs: “The Lord is The Answer,“ that sort of thing. Left me wondering what they thought the question was.

I prayed for the location of a gas station with 91 octane gas. Never heard back from the Lord. Got along just fine without.

While dozing in the sidecar, with Mrs. Data Port driving, I thought of a question I’d really like the Lord…or someone…to answer: Why do conservative candidates refuse to debate their progressive opponents?

A series of ten or twelve debates in whatever political division is being contested would be more rational, more informative, and a good deal cheaper than campaigning  by TV sound bites.

Either the conservatives are too dumb to debate or they believe the electorate is composed mindless dolts who couldn’t follow an argument. Or maybe they’re afraid they could follow an argument.

Whichever is true, things don’t look good for the American political project.
