Hit and run kills bicyclist: Drake G. Okusako
Drake G. Okusako, 55, was killed May 29, when his bicycle was hit by a driver who then fled the scene, according a spokeswoman from the Tucson Police Department.
Okusako, who had been wearing a helmet and riding in the bicycle lane, was hit just south of the intersection of East Broadway and Alvernon Way and pronounced dead at the scene, Officer Linda Galindo said in a news release.
Jesse J. Segebartt, the 19-year-old driver accused of crashing into Okusako was found and charged with one count of failure to remain at the scene of an injury accident, Galindo said. Toxicology tests are underway and more charges may be pending.
Segebartt was tracked down by witnesses who noted the license plate number on the 2000 Nissan Altima he was driving. He was reported as traveling southbound on Alvernon “at a high rate of speed, weaving in and out of traffic,” Galindo said. Immediately prior to smashing into Okusako, Segebartt was apparently changing lanes from the median lane to the curb lane and swerved into the marked bicycle lane.
Okusako was a quiet man and kind man, according to a repot in the Arizona Daily Star, best known for his role as longtime soccer coach for Randolph Soccer Club’s Apache team.
He lived all over the world, growing up in Japan, Taiwan and California and later joining the U.S. Army where he worked as a dental technician. In addition to being a passionate bicyclist, he was an avid photographer. He moved to Tucson after his stint in the army and never bought a computer. He’d use one at the public library if need be. He also spent a lot of time reading books, especially comics, Westerns and science fiction.
Okusako never married and had no children, save for those who coached for more than 10 years who often called him “Coach Oke” or “Coach Oka.” A small shrine was erected in his honor near the spot where Okusako was hit on the outskirts of Reid Park and the soccer club is planning a memorial service.
