Rynski's Day of the Dead - TucsonCitizen.com Ryngmaster Ryn Gargulinski brings closure for Tucson's dead

An SUV crammed with 27 illegal immigrants crashed June 6, killing 11 of the people inside, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The crash occurred shortly before midnight in a remote area on State Route 82, four miles east of Sonoita. The van’s driver lost control of the 2000 Ford Excursion and it crashed and rolled, throwing most of the occupants from the vehicle.

Of the 27 people inside the vehicle, DPS said eight were dead, five were airlifted to a Tucson area hospital and 14 were taken by ambulance to Tucson and Sierra Vista. Three others died following the preliminary body count.

The DPS news release originally said five of the people tried to flee, but those people were later accounted for and treated for any injuries.

The cause of the crash is unknown and DPS is investigating for possible criminal charges.

UPDATE 6/17:

The driver of the van that crashed and killed 11 illegal immigrants could face the death penalty for his role in the crime. Oscar Garay-Mariscal, 22, has been charged with conspiracy to transport illegal immigrants for profit resulting in death, according to a news release from the district of Arizona’s Office of the United States Attorney:

Oscar Garay-Mariscal, aka Oscar Garay-Lizarraga, 22, of Mexico, is in federal custody, charged by a criminal complaint with conspiracy to transport illegal aliens for profit resulting in death. Garay is alleged to have been a guide supporting the transportation of illegal aliens who were involved in a fatal crash on June 6 in southern Arizona.  Eleven of the 27 occupants in the vehicle were killed.  Because of the injuries he sustained, Garay-Mariscal made his initial appearance before a U.S. Magistrate in federal court on June 17.  He is being detained pending trial.

Garay  and other unidentified co-conspirators, agreed to transport and move illegal aliens within the United States. An unidentified co-conspirator, referred to as John Doe 1, is alleged to have driven a 2000 Ford Excursion to an unknown location in southern Arizona and ordered a second unidentified co-conspirator, John Doe 2, and other illegal aliens into the vehicle. According to the complaint filed in federal court, John Doe 1 ordered John Doe 2 to drive the vehicle and gave travel directions. As John Doe 2 drove the vehicle eastbound through the intersection of Arizona State Route 82 and State Route 83, towards Huachaca City, Ariz., John Doe 1 told John Doe 2 to first slow down, and then to speed up when the Border Patrol vehicle headed in their direction.  One of tires on the vehicle appears to have failed and the vehicle was involved in a rollover crash. Many of the occupants of the vehicle were ejected, ultimately killing eleven and injuring 16 others.

Garay was identified by two material witnesses to the case as one of the guides who assisted them with their illegal entry into the U.S. The defendant and other guides are alleged to have given general instructions during their journey, threatening them with bodily injury if they did not comply or said anything to law enforcement about their involvement as guides.

A conviction for conspiracy to transport for profit resulting in death, carries a maximum penalty of death or life imprisonment, a $250,000 fine or both.

I wonder what Sotomayor and La Raza have to say about this tragedy? Or the shootout in Acapulco that killed two policemen and 16 cartel killers?

“…possible criminal charges.” Give me a break. How about looking for the perps who will be charged with a minimum of criminal conspiracy and first degree murder. Or is the notion of empathy so ingrained in our collective consciousness that we overlook the victims concentrating instead on the rights of the perpetrators?

Where is the outrage against the news reports of death and destruction on the “Highway of death” in our country? One could imagine la raza rationalizing the slaughter as “better one alive make it into this country at a cost of scores dead than not to try at all.” Or words to that effect. I do believe they are trying to attack our sensibilities with these stories so that we will open the floodgates at the border to assuage our feelings of self-loathing and guilt. You see, to them we are the true killers who are causing these tragedies.

Pathetic and tragic! Meanwhile, California is beating the drum of insolvency with their costly welfare system as a warning to the rest of the country.

Well said vet66-Seems like the politicians NEVER bring up this obvious huge waste of taxpayer dough, except at election time, then it is conveniently forgotten afterwards.

Frankly, I can’t imagine that at all.

Why did it go from 10 dead to 8 dead?

    • Rynski

      Hi Logical,

You are so astute. DPS did, in fact, report 10 dead.

Here’s the explanation from the DPS news release:

Also DPS recently learned that two of the original 10 persons that were believed to have passed away are currently in the hospital with life threatening injuries, changing the total deceased to 8, we apologize for the confusion, as we continue to identify all those involved.

I’ll bet those two people are relieved to know they are not dead.

I’ll bet they still think they can get “jobs” in the U.S.A. too.

Any of you has a lot more in common with migrants than you do with the system that exploits you as well as them. Why not direct some of your anger in that direction?
