Kenneth Phipps, 76, was shot and killed on Nov. 8, allegedly by his stepson during a domestic dispute, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Police were called to the 9600 block of East 31st Street around 1 p.m. and found Phipps suffering from gunshot trauma. Tucson Fire Department paramedics pronounced him dead at 1:07 p.m.

Phipps’ stepson Kevin Black, 50, was arrested at the scene and booked into Pima County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder.

Two other family members were in the home at the time of the domestic dispute but they were not harmed.

Carlos Jose Birmingham, 19, was found fatally shot and lying in the street on Nov. 8, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Police were called to the 5800 block of East 23rd Street around 1 a.m. after they received several reports of gunshots in the area while a large party was going on.

They found Tucson man Birmingham dead in the street and received an additional report of another gunshot victim arriving at the emergency room of a local hospital.

Police determined the party turned violent and escalated into gunfire. They are also urging witnesses from the scene to come forward with information by calling 911 or 88-CRIME.

Adrian H. Rojas, 32, died after he was dropped off at St. Mary’s Hospital on Oct. 3, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Rojas had been shot and dropped off at the emergency room entrance by an unknown man about 7:15 p.m. The man had been driving a grey or silver sedan but did not stick around.

Police have interviewed family members but are still investigating where the shooting may have taken place and others who may have been Rojas when it happened.

Detectives are not ruling out an accidental shooting.

Police urge anyone with information to call 88-CRIME or 911.

Michael Kilbarger, 23, was fatally shot following an altercation with another man on Nov. 3, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Officers were called to the 2500 block of North Fontana Avenue, north of East Grant Road, around 2 p.m. where they found Kilbarger suffering from gunshot trauma.

Police determined that Kilbarger and his girlfriend were visiting a man who lived in the area when the girlfriend got into an argument with the resident.

Kilbarger pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the man and the man, in turn, pulled out a handgun and shot Kilbarger.

Kilbarger was pronounced dead at University Medical Center at 2:47 p.m.

Police initially took one man into custody immediately following the shooting, thinking he may have been involved, but he was let go.

No arrests have been made.

Angel A. Martinez, 20, was shot just outside the front entrance of the Candy Store Show Club in the early morning hours of Oct. 28, according to Tucson Police Department spokesman Sgt. Fabian Pacheco.

Martinez was taken to University Medical Center following the 1 a.m. shooting where he died soon after arrival.

Martinez had been inside the club, located at 1104 S. Craycroft Road, speaking with two men and, when he went to leave, he was confronted by several other men who had also been inside the club.

“A physical altercation erupted, which escalated to a shooting,” Pacheco said.

Police believe the suspects are active gang members and gang unit detectives are investigating.

No arrests have yet been made, but Pacheco said police have some promising leads and are still interviewing witnesses and processing the crime scene.

This is the second homicide at the Candy Store Show Club in the past four months.

David H. Tyne, 31, was shot outside the Candy Store Show Club on July 30 in what police say is a gang-related crime. He, too, died soon after his arrival at the hospital.

“Think of Candy Store Show Club as a guaranteed hangover,” according to a post on ClubPlanet.com. “And we mean that in the best possible way. It’s open all night, so it’s a pretty good bet that you’re going to be feeling it the next morning. Enjoy the late-night debauchery, but drink lots of water and pop some Advil.”

UPDATE 11:30 a.m. OCT. 28:

Police arrested Cliffton Martinez, 28, in connection with the shooting death of Angel Martinez on Oct. 28, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Cliffton Martinez was arrested several hours after the confrontation and is being charged with one count of first-degree murder.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but police determined that Cliffton Martinez was the one who brandished a handgun and then allegedly shot the victim during the altercation.

Police said the two men were not related.

Robert McKane, 40, was shot and killed Oct. 18 during an argument about drugs, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

McKane had been inside his home in the 1800 block of South Winmor Avenue when he began arguing about the drugs with one of his acquaintances. The bickering turned violent when the acquaintance pulled out a gun and shot McKane dead.

“The suspect is described as a Hispanic Male, approximately 6 foot tall, 180 pounds, with one prosthetic leg,” the release said. The guy took off in a newer model, dark Chevy Malibu with 20 to 22 inch rims.

Tucson police have an arrest warrant for the one-legged man suspected of killing Robert McKane. Police ask folks to be on the lookout for Esteban Javier Terrazas, who is described above. His warrant charges one count of first degree murder in connection with McKane’s shooting death.

Police urge anyone with information to call 911 or 88-CRIME.

Kandice Sue Smith, 21, was shot and killed on Oct. 6, allegedly by her boyfriend, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Boyfriend Rodney Lavon Kirk, 23, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Smith’s death.

Initial reports said Smith and Kirk were visiting family members and Kirk’s gun discharged and shot Smith as they were leaving. No charges were immediately filed.

However, the news release pointed out, “Further investigation revealed inconsistencies between evidence recovered at the scene and Mr. Kirk’s statement to detectives.”

Police were called to the 1700 block of West Summer Dawn around 9:50 p.m. and found Smith suffering from gunshot trauma. She died soon after being taken to the hospital.

Damien C. Moores, 35, was shot and killed on Sept. 25 at a midtown apartment complex, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Police were called to the complex in the 4200 block North First Avenue about 5:40 a.m. to investigate a shooting. They found Moores wounded from “gunshot trauma.” He died at the scene.

The shooting occurred after an altercation broke out among several men that were inside one of the apartments. At least three men fled the scene before police arrived. Other men, and several women, remained on the scene and answered questions.

No arrests have been made and the motive is not yet known.

Police urge anyone with information to call 911 or 88-CRIME.

Martin Cesar Suarez-Gomez, 37, was found suffering from gunshot wounds on Sept. 8; he died at the scene, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Suarez-Gomez was a citizen of Santa Ana in Sonora, Mexico, and police have classified his death a homicide.

Suarez-Gomez was found about 8:30 p.m. inside a home in the 100 block of West Pastime. No arrests have been made.

Shawn Conrad, 27, was fatally shot on Sept. 4 in the parking lot of the Cowpony Bar, according to a news release from the Tucson Police Department.

Conrad died less than an hour after the 10:24 p.m. shooting after being taken to University Medical Center.

Conrad had been one of several individuals who were assaulting a 24-year-old man in front of the bar, 6510 E. Tanque Verde Road. One of the attackers was assaulting the 24-year-old with a deadly weapon when the 24-year-old pulled out a handgun and shot Conrad. Conrad’s was the only death reported from this incident.

Gang detectives have made one arrest, John Majalca, 31, in connection with Conrad’s death. Majalca was one of the individuals who was on the scene assaulting the 24-year old.

Majalca is being charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault with serious injury or dangerous instrument, attempted aggravated robbery and attempted armed robbery.
