And, BTW, I purchased my .30-06 Weatherby Vanguard at Wal-Mart. They sold it for a better price than I could get from the gun show at Pima County Fairgrounds.

I see the 60% figure cited over and over again, and hundreds of people go to those gun shows while I’ve never seen anyone waiting in line to buy a gun a Walmart. But let’s just agree on zero percent not being properly vetted.

The ban on fully automatic weapons in the 1930s was in response to Al Capone type gangsters mowing down dozens of people with “Tommy” guns. And is proof that the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms does not mean the right to own any and every weapon ever invented. Doesn’t the Aurora theater nut job mowing down dozens of people with a semi automatic weapon with 100 round magazine warrant a ban on those weapons and large magazines? If a hunter needs a 100 round magazine to bring down a deer he really shouldn’t be hunting, and a 12 gauge shotgun with 5 round clip will stop the most determined home invader.

I think all reasonable people support comprehensive background checks for all purchasers in all gun sales. I know I do . BTW, your 60% figure needs some documentation. I read 15% is much closer to reality. In any case there ought be zero percent of sales that are not properly vetted.

Then I assume you strongly support background checks for ALL gun sales? We can’t “regulate WHO is sane enough to buy and own firearms” when 60% of gun sales don’t go through background checks, i.e., gun :shows”.

No fully automatic weapons is the current law. That’s been adequate since the 1930s. That standard don’t need changing today. What needs to change is to regulate WHO is sane enough to buy and own firearms. That’s going to take amending some privacy laws to permit access to psychological records and better vetting of buyers..

The notion that “At the time of the 2nd A’s writing, all personal arms were single shot muzzle loaders.” is factually incorrect. Multiple barrel firearms date back to the 1300s… there were volley guns with 8 barrels, early 16th century. Just like in today’s world, the average Joe couldn’t always afford cutting technology firearms. That doesn’t mean to say there weren’t any available. They just cost more bucks than many folks wanted to shell out.
