Plaid Fad

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

I took a walk the other day, as I often do, so I can people watch.  I noticed that many girls were wearing different variations of plaid.  Some wore brightly colored shirts or dresses and others had plaid incorporated into their outfits on scarves and bags.

This revival for the trend of plaid is popping up everywhere and I can’t seem to go a day without seeing plaid somewhere!

Have you ever wondered what started this growing trend? The definition directly is ‘Any fabric woven of differently colored yarns in a cross barred pattern.’

Its origin began in the early 1500’s in Scottland when different clans (households ) wanted to be distinguished from one another by their form of dress, traditionally being a kilt or a blanket if you were a woman.  A traditional mens style:

One of the most famous, well known, and easily recognized is the Royal Stuart Plaid:

These designs really hit home with me because I am of Celtic descent and I love that plaid is being incorporated in modern day use.

Steam It Up!

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I have heard the term Steampunk being thrown around a lot lately and I keep stumbling across it in fashion blogs or as obvious inspiration in various clothing lines.  Apparently this term has been around for over 20 years, but I just started hearing it on a regular basis.  When used as a fashion term, it refers to garments and accessories that are ‘Victorian-punk ‘ in nature.   It is a new take on 19th century fashion, when steam power was used (hence the name).   Steampunk fashion can definitely have a cybergoth/cosplay nerd feel to it, but you have to look past the silly stuff to get to the good stuff.   I love nerdy stuff, but realistically, there are only parts of this trend that are wearable on a daily basis.  When I think of Steampunk, I think of Violet from Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.

According to Etsy, these are random Steampunk things:

  • Airships
  • Goggles
  • Pocket watches
  • Gears and Cogs
  • Wilson safety glasses
  • Neo Victorian Dress
  • Trains (steam)
  • Brass and Copper
  • Mad Scientists
  • Literature Late 1800’s early 1900’s
  • Old fashion style laser guns
  • Monocles
  • Tesla
  • Unusual inventions

Skulls Skulls & More Skulls…

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009
Yes, I am still sort of amazed at the longevity of the SKULL in clothing & accessory designs.  Not only that, but that you can find tee shirts with skulls on them at Target!  My mother has even bought me rhinestone skull necklaces off the Home Shopping Network!!  At first I think I was miffed at seeing skulls more in mainstream, thinking it would somehow lessen their ‘cool’ appeal, but I have long since gotten over that and still display mine with pride.  I have been a skull girl for a super long time and now that I have one tattooed on my arm, I will be for even longer.  My favorite skull design (this week):
