Steam It Up!
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009I have heard the term Steampunk being thrown around a lot lately and I keep stumbling across it in fashion blogs or as obvious inspiration in various clothing lines. Apparently this term has been around for over 20 years, but I just started hearing it on a regular basis. When used as a fashion term, it refers to garments and accessories that are ‘Victorian-punk ‘ in nature. It is a new take on 19th century fashion, when steam power was used (hence the name). Steampunk fashion can definitely have a cybergoth/cosplay nerd feel to it, but you have to look past the silly stuff to get to the good stuff. I love nerdy stuff, but realistically, there are only parts of this trend that are wearable on a daily basis. When I think of Steampunk, I think of Violet from Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.
