Incompetence? An Attempted Buzzkill? An In-Kind Contribution? It’s Hard To Tell

by on Sep. 06, 2011, under Uncategorized

On September 1st, the day after the city primary election, people all over Tucson were asking themselves “Who was that masked man?”

No, they’re not Lone Ranger aficianados. They read the Arizona Daily Star‘s hardcopy edition.

At first, the cynic, the conservative and the Republican in me all wondered if the Arizona Daily Star was deliberately trying to pee on Rick Grinnell’s big day. Or, perhaps the Star was sending a fingerprints-free shout-out to the Rothschild campaign? (“Oh, just LOOK at how we mishandled that ad…oopsie!”)

The Star‘s distate for Republicans and fondness for Democrats is well-known. Moreover, their most consequential voice is—the Daily Fitz. I could envision an outfit like that deliberately pasting ads over the face of the candidate they’ll endorse when Hell freezes over.

Perhaps there was an alternate explanation? A Google search for an explanation by the Star, an apology to the Grinnell campaign, or both, turned up nothing.

Then, I was reminded of the wisdom embodied in the adage known as Hanlon’s Razor: Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

So, the three of us asked each other if the Star was inept enough to send thousands of papers across Arizona, with ads plastered over the face of a mayoral candidate.

Yep.

If the Star has a distaste for Republicans, why was Grinnell on page 1 with a photo twice as large as Rothschild’s page 4 picture? The stickie ad on my copy of the Star was up at the top– not on Grinnell’s photo. Check out my conversation with Grinnell and Rawson from yesterday’s Labor Day picnic. He’s just offering the SOS. Tucson desperately needs vision.

Pam, with all due respect, if you weren’t happy with Grinnell’s ideas, that makes me think that Rick Grinnell is going to be my kind of guy. No offense, but we see things, ahem, differently.

As for what Tucson needs, it needs to attract businesses. IMO, Republicans tend to create policies that create wealth, while Democrats redistribute wealth.

        Don…
Hope you had a good vacation.  The ad was a sticky, wasn’t it? Let me help out your conservative friends…they’re easily removed. Don’t be confused the next time that happens, pull the ad off and throw it away.

Art, conservatives writ large have computers and know how to use them. The online version of the Star wasn’t affected. BTW, where have you been? Up in Madison, pouring beer on Republican legislators?
