Gay Marriage & The Liars For Jesus Club!by Jim Gressinger on Jul. 02, 2011, under AZ Politics, Christianity, Ethics, Gay Marriage, Mormanism, Science
First, I must attend to some personal business. Anon and I have a bet as to who will achieve their personal weight loss goal over the next 120 days. I’ve never met Anon, but he or she self-describes as short and fat. Anon has faith in some goddess known as Jenny Craig. I, on the other hand, have the benefit of Theophile’s ardent prayers.
Well, I got weighed yesterday at my doctor’s and I lost 1.6 pounds in the last week. I know what you’re thinking – not much to crow about. But at least I’ve reversed the upward trend. Moreover, in the past 4 mornings, I have climbed neighbor Roy’s hill 3 times.
From my perspective (old, fat, and outa shape), Roy’s Hill looks very similar to Mt. Everest. Several days ago when I first ascended, I required a sherpa and oxygen tank. And even then I had to stop and catch my breath 4 times. This morning was ascent #3. Not only did I not require the sherpa or oxygen, I made it to the top (maybe 60 feet) without stopping once. So Theophile, keep up those prayers. They’re obviously working a miracle.
Now, down to business. I have stated in multiple posts that the Center for Arizona Policy is headquarters for the Phoenix branch of the Liars For Jesus Club. They repeat their lies so often that many Arizonans believe the lies are true. In that sense, CAP resembles the Nazis. Herr Goering would be proud.
One of their favorite lies is this: If gay marriage becomes legal, children’s lives will be destroyed, America will fall into ruin, and civilization will cease to exist. Or some such nonsense. Some of the members of CFI-SAZ have offered the religious extremists in our legislature compelling empirical evidence to the contrary. Do you think these true believers listened to the evidence? Actually, NO! I was told by one Republican legislator, “You have your evidence and we have ours.” It was then that I became aware that Christian fundamentalists and I have different definitions for terms such as “evidence”, “facts”, “truth” and “reality”. I really don’t know how to communicate with people who can’t distinguish fact from fiction, reality from myth, and truth from falsehood.
That said, this morning Stuart commented on my post yesterday. His comment is so critical to this issue of gay marriage that I repeat it here.
There have been studies of child rearing outcomes looking at the gender of the parent and the number of parents in the household. Last year the Journal of Marriage and the Family published an article based on a review of 114 studies. Here again is the conclusion from that research:
“The entrenched conviction that children need both a mother and a father inflames culture wars over single motherhood, divorce, gay marriage, and gay parenting. Research to date, however, does not support this claim. Contrary to popular belief, studies have not shown that “compared to all other family forms, families headed by married, biological parents are best for children” (Popenoe, quoted in Center for Marriage and Family, p. 1). “
Thank you, Stuart. I am sure CAP president Cathi Herrod, will read this compelling research and direct her organization to support gay marriage in Arizona. Or maybe not. Maybe she will just have a change of lying tactics and admit that the reason CAP opposes gay marriage is because they’re a bunch of homophobic bigots. I’m certain it will be one or the other. jg
