This comes to us from Shane Jones:
The argument against faith in a foxhole:
I find it humorous at best that people suggest, “There are no atheists in foxholes.” They do not see that this is the exact reason why the whole “religious, god, deity” thing kind of explains exactly why religious faith and war go hand in hand.
I mean without god for these people, who would ever find the strength, the faith, to put their lives on the line when there is no afterlife and no god on their side?
When you could be wrong, your leaders can be wrong, your country can be wrong, because you have to rely on your own knowledge, and your life has exponentially more value since it is the only life you’ll ever have.
It becomes explicitly moronic to rise up in violent arms against another person (lifestyle, culture, country) over a disagreement, no matter how heinous it is.
The next time someone says to you, “There are no atheists in foxholes.” I say you run with it, you tell them that they are right, and then explain to them what that actually says about religious people. You know, the people who are (according to these Theists) the only ones constantly trying to kill each other. Then let the mental gymnastics and conversational back pedaling ensue.
If people are so narrow minded as to how erroneous that claim is, grant their claim and show them how it makes them look unethical. It’s a sure fire way to get them to keep their mouths shut the next time you are in the room.
