Skeptical Wednesday for June 13, 2012: James Randi Educational Foundation and The Amazing Meeting 2012by Don Lacey on Jun. 13, 2012, under Atheism, Critical Thinking, Education, Ethics, Freethought Events, History, Logic, Materialism, Nature, Reason, Sanity, Science, Separation of Church & State, Skepticism
Next month in Las Vegas, Nevada TAM 2012 (The Amazing Meeting 2012) will be taking place. TAM is the largest most diverse gathering of Skeptics on the planet. It runs from July 12th through July 15th and will be at the South Point Hotel a few miles south of the “Strip.”There will be a large number of speakers (click here to see the list of confirmed speakers) and over 1500 Skeptics from around the world. Penn and Teller will be a special part of the event as they put on an hour long keynote event to celebrate 38 years of magic. I’m looking forward to the opening reception and the Donut and Bacon, Rock and Roll party. What I like most about the event, however, is the time spent hanging out in the Del Mar Bar with fellow Skeptics. Many other organizations will be there in force. The Richard Dawkins Foundation of Reason and Science has put up money for child care this year. The incredibly talented George Hrab will once again be the emcee. They’ll be a Friggatriskaidekaphobia (Fear of Friday the 13th) treatment service hosted by Margaret Downey. You can get a vaccination and get a hug for free. Optional workshops are available for a variety of Skeptical Topics but most of the meeting is held in one big room so you don’t have to worry about missing any of the Skeptical goodness. At the very end, there is sure to be a demonstration of the Million Dollar Challenge. Someone claiming paranormal ability will try and prove that ability through a mutually agreed to test. It’s amazing to see over a thousand people in a room gazing on in silence as someone tries to prove themselves worthy of the million dollar prize.
I’ve been attending this meeting since TAM 5 in 2007. Every year it gets better. I expect this year will be great too.
