Coming out Atheist. What a sense of relief!by Don Lacey on Oct. 18, 2012, under Atheism, Christian Self-Righteous Arrogance, Christianity, Critical Thinking, Ethics, Faith, Freethought, Freethought Events, Reason, Religion
Most Atheists express a sense of relief when they decided to come out. There are some consequences to be sure but overall it is a positive experience. Of course, I’ve been out for quite a while and a vanity search of images associated with Tucson and Atheism usually has my mug near the top. That would be expected but there are a variety of others that appear there as well. Through the internet many Atheist have found that they are not alone. It’s great to know that you’re not the only one that has questions. Sometimes it’s surprising how many people that you deal with on a daily basis have similar “lack of beliefs.” I was chatting with an independent contractor the other day about this and that and he said something like, “I hope this doesn’t offend you but I find this religious teaching ludicrous.” I almost laughed out loud and handed him my card that identifies me at the State Director for American Atheists. He thought that I might be religious and was afraid to offend ME! Chris was a great worker and did what he said he would do at the cost that he estimated and I couldn’t have been happier with his work.
There is a place to meet with other Atheists and discuss openly without fear of retribution their feelings. The membership has skyrocketed in that last couple of years. Five years ago we had maybe three dozen members. Now we have close to 550. We’ll get another chance to come together today at Fronimos at a meeting we call “Caffeinated Godlessness.” It used to be held in a coffee shop but is now held in a Greek restaurant. They give us a private area and the food is good. If you’re an Atheist or Atheist friendly, you should come. It starts at 7PM and ends at 9.
In doing research for this article I found that there is a Catholic webpage that depicts the face of Atheists in Tucson as Jared Lee Loughner. It’s not clear that he was an Atheist but the Church can make the claim if they want. It’s not true of course. Jared Lee Loughner is not the face of Atheism in Tucson. Is the face of Catholicism in Tucson the Rev. Thomas P. Purcell? He was convicted of three counts of sexual conduct with a minor and one count of attempted sexual conduct with a minor. That wouldn’t be fair would it? How about the other eight priests who were accused of using their exalted religious position to prey on the innocence of young boys? In Arizona alone there have been some four dozen priests accused of sexual molestation yet it would be unfair to characterize the leaders of Catholicism as child molesters but one demented possible Atheist not even a leader of any sort is the “face” of Atheism? Get real! HERE is the link in case you’re interested. Note also that the text is plagiarized from my Tucson Atheist Meetup.com group where Jared was NOT a member. To the authors of http://www.romancatholicimperialist.org/: You’re disgusting! I’m glad the settlements to the victims of your abuse bankrupted you.
