In a breaking news posting on the 7th of November, the Center for Arizona Policy called for their followers to complain to Senators McCain and Flake because they voted for the ENDA (Employment Non-Discrimination Act). This act, if passed, would prohibit an employer to discriminate in hiring and employment based on a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Our Arizona Senators should be congratulated for their votes on this issue but Cathi Herrod and her CAP (Center for Arizona Policy) believe that being able to discriminate on the basis of religious bigotry is a Christian value and should be considered a right.
Last year, the CAP used its considerable influence to kill a bill that would protect students from bullying. The reason? Cathi Herrod believed that the bill would mainly benefit gay kids even though sexual orientation or gay were not mentioned in the text of the bill. The bill offered protection for all kids, gay or straight, but CAP is so focused on pushing an agenda of religious bigotry in Arizona, that they made sure that the anti-bullying law was shelved. It was a law that had been through the requisite committees and approved by the state Senate. The bill was held up in the state House and effectively killed. Mission accomplished! Apparently, homophobia is a central value of the Center for Arizona Policy.
The national organizations that oppose ENDA include the usual suspects: American Family Association, the Traditional Values Coalition, Libertarians, and the Catholic Church. Other than the Libertarians’ objections based on their standard argument against government coercion of employers, the other objections are all based on religious beliefs. Laws should not be based on religious beliefs. Instead, they should be based on reason and logic with a secular purpose. Our rules should not be based on the beliefs on any religious group or groups. Most people would agree that imposing Sharia Law in the United States would be a non-starter. Sharia law is based on Muslim principles. A quick look at the laws of inheritance is all that is necessary to determine how incompatible the Sharia laws are with current U.S. civil law. Male heirs receive twice as much as female heirs, for example.
Most Biblical laws are also easy to dismiss as incompatible with our current society. There are the biggies like slave ownership and working on the Sabbath but apparently treating homosexuals as abominations is still OK in some Christian groups. That’s why we have the bullying and ENDA controversies.
Please let Senators McCain and Flake know that you appreciate their vote in this important issue and encourage your House Representative to move this bill forward toward adoption.
