Holiday Gamez: Day 16, With Name That Game and Free Food

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Christmas is literally just around the corner and the 24 days of Christmas continues. Got a relative or are yourself an RPG gamer? Welcome to Day 16 of Holiday Gamez and Square Enix titles and free food are on the menu. To aid you in the quest to filter the junk from the good stuff, games listed below have a 75% or above Metacritic rating and less than $20 per game (with one exception to these rules today). No opinions are ever made on the games listed.

In addition to deals, Direct2Drive is still running their “Name that game” contest. Today’s ornament is of the box art from Resident Evil 5. Huzzah! A pretty decently rated survival horror game:

Resident Evil 5 (PC, 2009) – 87%, Rank #152
Genre: Third-Person Action, Adventure, Survival Horror
ESRB: M (Mature)

Also, there is a FREE Taquito from Whataburger today. A yummy in my tummy.

Holiday Gamez: Day 4, With Name That Game

Friday, December 4th, 2009

According to GoGamer, Green Friday, another silly name, is here and the deals keep rolling in. Christmas is now just around the corner and today you have the opportunity to pick up some great games for the video gamer in your family or just for yourself. Day 4 of Holiday Gamez begins with a selection from Amazon, GoGamer, Direct2Drive, and Steam. To aid you in the quest to filter the junk from the good stuff, games listed below have a 75% or above Metacritic rating and less than $20 per game. No opinions are ever made on the games listed.

In addition to deals, Direct2Drive is still running their “Name that game” contest. We have a rather obscure ornament this time: Prototype.

Prototype (PC, 2009) – 83%, Rank #294
Genre: Action, Adventure
ESRB: M (Mature)

My initial guess was Altair from Assassin’s Creed but the face in the ornament is more hidden than usual if that were the case. Then I thought Thief: Deadly Shadows – closer but it still seemed wrong. Then I got desperate: Any of the Penumbra games…The guy from Dreamfall…Less likely: Neverwinter Nights 1/2, Dragon Age Origins. I had to rack my brain for who else wears a hood and, shamefully, ended up scanning their entire game collection for the answer. I’ve been wanting to play Prototype. Hopefully we get a great deal on it tomorrow.

Holiday Gamez: Day 1, Plus: Name That Game

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

With the poorly-named Cyber Monday gone, Christmas is now just around the corner – and you really needed that reminder. Things are just warming up for video gamers and those looking for deals on video games for that gamer in your family. TucsonCitizen.com’s Gamerz blog will continue to have the most comprehensive list of video game deals for Tucson residents. To that end, we begin Day 1 of Holiday Gamez with a selection from Amazon, Direct2Drive, and Steam. To aid you in the quest to filter the junk from the good stuff, games listed below have a 75% or above Metacritic rating and less than $20 per game. No opinions are ever made on the games listed.

In addition to deals, Direct2Drive is running a “Name that game” contest. I’m drawing a blank for today’s “ornament”. The game character looks somewhat like the Warcraft III: Frozen Throne character who was a jerk of a prince and eventually betrays his own kind but the outfit and scar are wrong. It can’t be Neverwinter Nights, Last Chaos, Lord of the Rings, or Final Fantasy because the character is human, not elf (no pointy ears) nor has a ridiculously gigantic sword. The character art looks modern MMORPG’ish and looks familiar – maybe WoW, but I wouldn’t know. WoW is less a video game and more of a job.

If you happen to know the answer, drop a line in the comments section so everyone can benefit.

Update: Thanks to local gamer Idonyo, the answer is: The Witcher. (Or it could be Enhanced Edition or Director’s Cut but I doubt they are being that picky unless they prefilter answers with a computer program).

Mirror’s Edge (PC, 2009) – 80%, Rank #513
