Today marks the first day of deals on Steam of items in Square Enix’s collection of games. There will be a new deal each day. The Square Enix Complete Pack is on sale for $74.99.
Today’s deal is Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY for $7.50. This game is the best comic book/movie adaptation to video game. Ever. It supposedly had something to do with being in development before the movies were made so there wasn’t any sort of “Hey, we need a video game made for this movie” shenanigans going on that we usually see with most movie adaptations to games. This game just happened to coincide with the movies. It is rated T (Teen) but the ESRB really should have rated it M (Mature) due to its rather “gritty” storyline and gameplay. As an example, there are some rather disturbing bits of gameplay (warning, spoilers). Still, besides being a fantastic Batman adaptation, it is also actually a great button mashing game for the PC. No silly “Biff!” or “Pow!” here, but “Holy Heart Failure, Batman” is a classic cheesy one-liner that will put a smile on anyone’s face. This is about as close to being Batman as you can possibly get with today’s technology. Plus, the price of $7.50 puts it right in a fantastic spot for picking up a game with a 90% Metacritic rating. If you don’t own it and like button mashers, check to see if you want other games in the Pack vs. just this game and pick one or the other up if you haven’t purchased Batman Arkham already. Of all the games in the Square Enix Pack, this is one of the best.
I’ll make some predictions about the remaining individual games that will show up on sale in order of confidence:
Just Cause 2
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Tomb Raider Underworld
Supreme Commander 2
The Last Remnant
Final Fantasy XI Ultimate Collection
That last one was just a best guess and it is already on sale – so it is kind of cheating. The Hitman series will probably show up instead. I keep secretly hoping Square will bring FF7 and FF8 to Steam. I’d really like to see the entire Final Fantasy series come to PC, but that’s not likely ever going to happen, so I’ll settle for FF7 and FF8.
