Thanksgiving – Turkeys and Games
Thursday, November 25th, 2010It is that time of year again when people sit down to a turkey dinner with all the trimmings then sit down in front of a television screen and fall asleep. But those who play video games never sleep. For we know this is the time of year when deals on PC games are to be had. It has been a while since my last post for various reasons. Very few deals have occurred in the past few months – probably because it was the quiet before the storm that will deluge us.
Up first is Steam, my favorite PC and Mac gaming DRM-enabled platform. You have an hour left to go and make a wishlist of at least ten games to be eligible to win the top five games in that list for picks of who will win. Need some quick ideas?

Gamers Gate is revving up for Thanksgiving too but the offerings are a little bit slimmer. They mix in a lot of “meh” games in with the good stuff. Decent/similar deals on:

Visitors of this blog will note that there aren’t Metacritic ratings. I figure it will be easier to just list the games. In addition, Metacritic redesigned their website such that searching for ratings is a lot harder now. If something sounds interesting, you’ll have to look up information yourself until I can come up with a better system.
By the way, I suspect Torchlight will be one of the sale items over the next few days on Steam. If you haven’t played it but like dungeon crawlers (Diablo, Neverwinter Nights, etc.), Torchlight is awesome and has achievements when played on Steam – if you care about that sort of thing. I started playing it one afternoon and was expecting to stop after an hour or so and suddenly it was 2 a.m. and I had missed dinner. My only annoyance is the tiny inventory for all the loot, which can be somewhat remedied with mods. Otherwise, it is a seriously addicting game. I suspect it is such a well-built game because there is no multiplayer aspect, which allowed the entire development team was able to focus on just the single player game experience.
