Thanksgiving – Turkeys and Games
Thursday, November 25th, 2010It is that time of year again when people sit down to a turkey dinner with all the trimmings then sit down in front of a television screen and fall asleep. But those who play video games never sleep. For we know this is the time of year when deals on PC games are to be had. It has been a while since my last post for various reasons. Very few deals have occurred in the past few months – probably because it was the quiet before the storm that will deluge us.
Up first is Steam, my favorite PC and Mac gaming DRM-enabled platform. You have an hour left to go and make a wishlist of at least ten games to be eligible to win the top five games in that list for picks of who will win. Need some quick ideas?
Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition
Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition
Fallout 3 – Game Of The Year Edition
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Portal 2 (not released yet, but it is on Steam)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
The Witcher 2
BioShock 2
Mass Effect 2
Prototype (Currently on sale for $14.99)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
R.U.S.E. (Currently on “sale” for $33.49)
Battlefield 2 Complete Collection
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
Borderlands (Currently on sale for $9.99, not the GOTY edition with all the DLC though – and doesn’t look like GOTY can be specifically added to the wishlist)
The Path
Torchlight
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction
The best deal currently on Steam is the Indie Energy Pack for $4.99 – $1 per game.
Gamers Gate is revving up for Thanksgiving too but the offerings are a little bit slimmer. They mix in a lot of “meh” games in with the good stuff. Decent/similar deals on:
Alpha Protocol
Devil May Cry 4
Eufloria
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition – Colonies Edition
Medieval 2: Total War
Torchlight
The X-Men games
Direct2Drive is giving away one out of every five games purchased. “Feeling Lucky?” Other than that, they don’t seem to have much else going on. Yet.
Impulse Driven has their own set of Thanksgiving sales going on:
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Bundle
Dragon Age: Origins – Ultimate Edition
Tropico 3
Total Annihilation
Dawn of Discovery Gold
THQ Ultimate Bundle
Company of Heroes Gold
Resident Evil 5
GoGamer is doing their madness thing. And they have some really nice deals:
Assassin’s Creed: Director’s Cut
Trine
Company of Heroes
Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War – GOTY Edition
Star Wars: Empire At War
Dirt 2
Mass Effect
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Batman Arkham Asylum (A pretty good deal)
Just Cause 2
Napoleon: Total War (A fantastic deal for a game that came out this year with good ratings)
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction (A good deal for a game that came out this year but has low user ratings)
LEGO Harry Potter (if you are seriously into either LEGO or Harry Potter, otherwise pass)
Call of Juarez (good deal here if you want to try a western shooter)
Frontlines: Fuel of War (average shooter)
Call of Duty 4 – GOTY Edition (a decent deal)
Visitors of this blog will note that there aren’t Metacritic ratings. I figure it will be easier to just list the games. In addition, Metacritic redesigned their website such that searching for ratings is a lot harder now. If something sounds interesting, you’ll have to look up information yourself until I can come up with a better system.
By the way, I suspect Torchlight will be one of the sale items over the next few days on Steam. If you haven’t played it but like dungeon crawlers (Diablo, Neverwinter Nights, etc.), Torchlight is awesome and has achievements when played on Steam – if you care about that sort of thing. I started playing it one afternoon and was expecting to stop after an hour or so and suddenly it was 2 a.m. and I had missed dinner. My only annoyance is the tiny inventory for all the loot, which can be somewhat remedied with mods. Otherwise, it is a seriously addicting game. I suspect it is such a well-built game because there is no multiplayer aspect, which allowed the entire development team was able to focus on just the single player game experience.
