Steam has a bunch of deals and prizes…

Friday, July 1st, 2011

You already missed yesterday’s deals (Borderlands GOTY, Recettear, and a couple of others), but head on over to Steam and pick up some new video games and reduced prices. There’s a whole bunch of deals to be had including Just Cause 2, which has achievements and, once again, I’ve gotten them all:

Just 'Cause I can.

Just Cause 2, Braid, Devil May Cry 4, and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic are must-haves. If you are more into casual/thinking puzzles, there are Hamilton’s Great Adventure and SpaceChem. Everything else is a bit pricey. There are still tons of deals to be had over the next eight days, so if you’ve waited this long for some game to come down in price and still isn’t in range, you’ll probably pick up some fun games while you wait a bit longer.

Also, if you haven’t noticed, Team Fortress 2 is free. Actually, there are a number of “free to play” games where the catch is that you might end up buying stuff in-game to pad out your character.

There are also a number of achievements that will give you tickets that enter you into a drawing to win the top 10 items on your wishlist. You have to have a wishlist and have a list of ten games on it. Which is another reason to NOT buy the big expensive games right now – you might get them for free (maybe, probably not)! Fortunately, some of the tickets are easy to get. Today’s freebie tickets are: “Get set on fire and then take a dunk in some water in Team Fortress 2″ and “link your Facebook profile to Steam and lose the last bit of personal privacy you might have been holding onto.”

Steam Treasure Hunt – Part Six

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Steam is encouraging smack talk for this next round of the Steam treasure hunt. So I’m going to start my smack talking by saying that the deals today aren’t interesting but at least there is a freebie. I’m hoping for some awesome deals tomorrow or this will be a rather sad treasure hunt. So far, I’ve picked up a couple of games, but nothing spectacular has really made this event stick in my mind as being a treasure hunt.

  • Smack Talker – Post a comment on a friend’s Steam Community profile page (free)
  • One-Hit Wonder – Build a Wonder in Civilization V ($37.49)
  • Road Rage – Set a leaderboard score of at least 10,515 for ‘Slaughter, City Center’ in Zombie Driver ($2.50)
  • Butter Me Up – Build Me Up Buttercup in Bob came in Pieces ($2.50)

One of my new “friends” keeps having ADHD episodes and jumping between games every couple of minutes. I kind of feel sorry for the person even though the popup is quite distracting.

Steam Adventures, The Treasure Hunt Continues

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Another day, another opportunity to win the top five video games in your Steam wishlist. By the way, be sure to read the rules carefully – you have to have at least ten games in your wishlist in order to qualify! There is one freebie today and a couple of deals during the Steam Treasure Hunt:

  • Join the Club – Join an Official Group (free)
  • Family-Style – Get Back in Business in Mafia II ($33.49)
  • Stack the Deck – Be a Devastator in Magic: The Gathering ($4.99)
  • Just Drop It – Set a leaderboard score of at least 85,370 for ‘Classic – Small Wonder’ in Droplitz ($2.50)

It looks like getting the Team Fortress 2 hat of “Undeniable Wealth And Respect” will require quite a bit of wealth (literally) and, even after buying the game, it has to be downloaded, installed, and then get some sort of achievement. All within 48 hours. I guess that is where the “respect” part comes in. But, as folks have pointed out, anyone walking around TF2 with the hat on will be ridiculed. This whole treasure hunt feels more like a meta-achievement than an actual treasure hunt. With “objectives” being replaced for the word “achievement”. No one likes an overachiever.

I got the “Friends with Benefits” objective for December 8-9. That was the easiest ten “friends” I’ve ever made. :)
