About
God Blogging and More is written by Renee Schafer Horton, who, if left alone in a bookstore for any length of time, will gravitate to the religion/spirituality section in spite of coming to said bookstore for something other than another religion book.
Currently a reporting, writing and editing gun for hire, I’m the former higher education reporter for the Tucson Citizen, which closed May 15. Like the thousands of other journalists laid off in the past year due to newspaper deaths, I’m attempting to learn how I might serve in the new journalism world, or – as appears increasingly more likely for many of us – how to switch to another career.
Which brings me to my life prior to daily higher education reportage and why I’m writing this blog: I spent more than a decade as a Catholic press correspondent and nearly as long as a weekly and bi-weekly religion commentator in both the secular and Catholic press. I’ve amassed enough hours researching, reporting and writing on issues of religion that I probably qualify for an honorary master’s in Catholic theology or comparative Abrahamic religions. I started putting that knowledge – and my opinionated nature – to use in a blog a few months ago as preparation for the techtonic shift in journalism; I’m happy to have that blog now hosted at TC.com. If you want to have the lowdown on what the blog hopes to do, see my post regarding that matter here.
The “and more” allows for occasional off-the-religious-reservation posts about politics, culture, parenting and the University of Arizona. The conversation, however, can’t develop without you, dear readers, so please jump in to inform, comment or correct God Blogging posts. But, remember what you learned as a child: Play nice. We’re grownups, afterall, and vitriol is exhausting. Let the people say, “Amen.”
