“Crazed” Gunman

by on Nov. 06, 2009, under brain disorders, depression, General Mental Health, Health, health care reform, healthcare, mental illness, Obama, Politics, PTSD, recovery, stigma, Suicide

Major HasanIt’s already starting…..including right here on the Tucson Citizen site……..the man, Major Nadil Malik Hasan was “crazy.”  If you have read any of my blogs before, you know how important it is to me to try and create a world where people living with mental illnesses do not feel stigmatized and one of the first steps is to stop using horribly discrimating terms like “crazy” or “crazed.”  Yes, I agree that someone who goes on a rampage killing 12 people and wounding at least 31 others is not of sound mind, but why don’t we take a look at why this happened?

If you believe, as I do, that mental illnesses are illness just like any other, than why was this man, who supposedly treated other people with brain disorders, not receiving treatment himself?  Did  anyone not notice how he was struggling?  According to the “God Blogging” post on this site, NPR interviewed others at Walter Reed who said he was.

Which brings us back to the same problem, the same issues that continue to plague people with mental illness and their families.  Because of the stigma, because of the inattention by our health care system that doesn’t think the mind is part of one’s physical health, because of an overburdened mental healthcare system, because people suffering from a mental illness can feel isoloated and abandoned by their support structure, people with diagnosable brain disorders are falling through the cracks.  One again, as President Obama called this tragedy, “a horrific” catastrophe has occured in this country.

Who knows what was going on in Hasan’s head……Certainly listening to war stories from our returning Veterans experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was not an easy thing to do, but why is it that no one saw the signs, especially when he was set to deploy at the end of the month? Maybe Major Hasan will be able to shed some light on our questions.

  • tiponeill

There is no evidence whatsoever, so far, that he was suffering from any kind of mental illness.
There is plenty of evidence that he was motivated by religion.
When we say “crazy” what we mean is “irrational”, but there are multiple causes of irrational behavior, mental illness certainly being one but religion certainly being another.
It is much easier to blame mental illness than to blame religion, even when contrary evidence stares us in our face.

    • mорское

hey tippy …….. in this case, we are in agreement. religion was the factor ……… the religion of islam.

      mark it on your calendar.

      • leftfield

He was also military as much as he was Muslim.  How are you so sure that your prejudice is a reflection of reality?

        • mорское

i forgot lefty that all military are seething murderers.

what prejudice lefty? i am sure that you believe that islam is a religion of love but I don’t.

prejudice is in the eye of the beholder ………. especially when the poor little judged are trying to kill you.

but then, in your eyes they are the down trodden freedom fighters.

keep in mind there lefty ………. i am your enemy and you are mine. remember?

‘there have been several arrests within the military with regards to those plotting attacks against troops stationed at domestic American bases.”

this is just the first larger scale successful assault and unless they change their procedures, it will also be the first of many to come.

  • azmouse

Maybe it wasn’t a mental health issue at all. Maybe it was hatred?

  • greymatters

You both bring up good points…….but, how is it this man was able to continue to serve in his capacity and how it is he was approved for deployment?

    • mорское

      its called the military.

common sense and competent decision making are not requirements in the command structure.

    • mорское

there have been several arrests withinthe military with regards to those plotting attacks against troops stationed at domestic American bases.

the public never hears about them.

what you are hearing about this incident, outside the body count, is at best a partial truth.

  • greymatters

According the the New York Times:
“He (Major Hasan) was doing everything he could to avoid that,(deployment)” Mr. Nadar Hasan(cousin) said. “He wanted to do whatever he could within the rules to make sure he wouldn’t go over.”
Some years ago, that included retaining a lawyer and asking if he could get out of the Army before his contract was up, because of the harassment he had received as a Muslim. But Nader Hasan said the lawyer had told his cousin that even if he paid the Army back for his education, it would not allow him to leave before his commitment was up.”

    • azmouse

Yeah, our military is a job choice, basically. He had to fulfill his commitment, as they all do. I can totally understand not wanting to be sent away to a war, but I never enlisted either.

Nobody should be harassed because of their religious beliefs or non-beliefs, but it does happen. Many choose not to speak out about their religious feelings, politics, etc to avoid confrontation and keep it personal to yourself.

  • greymatters

It’s a shame that many people can’t discuss their religious beliefs or politics because of the fear of confrontation.  Maybe one day we’ll become a society of humane humans instead of judgemental jerks!!!

    • Jennatoolz

      One can only hope. :)

    • azmouse

      Agreed.

    • radmax

Poor misunderstood mass murderer. Bet his mommy was mean to him too…

    • mорское

what you refer to is a perfect situation within a group of imperfect humans.

    • Romeo

I would rather be a judgemental jerk and alive than a “humane human” and dead. I’ve grown rather attached to having my head connected to my neck.

      • leftfield

You have every reason to be pleased with yourself then.  You are both alive and judgemental.

  • Susan

does that mean your Mommy was mean to you? I’m sorry.

    • radmax

No, mom is very loving. But, she could be mean if I deserved it.
Just tired of people trying to justify a horrendous act.
If you see a mad dog, you don’t evaluate how he got that way, you put him down.

    • Romeo

You are gonna look hot in a burqa when they come for you Susan, don’t be sorry, be prepared. Fight the power!

  • Romeo

Who cares why he did it, he is a terrorist and a murderer and deserves to suffer. Wrap him in bacon and shove a ham sandwich in his mouth and then waterboard his a$$ and find out how many other trojans are in place like him. This PC krap has gone too far, but can I give a “shout out” to all the SERE instructors? Mmm Mmm Mmm.

    • leftfield

“he is a terrorist and a murderer”  I’m confused now; are we talking about Dick Cheney or Hasan?  Anyway, I like the idea of wrapping Dick Cheney in bacon and waterboarding him.

      • radmax

Bacon? :) The waterboarding might provide valuable insight into Cheney’s…never mind.

  • Romeo

We had a Lance Corporal at Kaneohe that thought it might be cool to start some chit and take out some squad mates as a show of rebellion and you know what happened? His mouth and attitude came to the attention of his unit and he found himself getting his attitude adjusted in the barracks by his Squad Leader and Staff Sgt. Just sayin’ why didn’t anyone in contact with this POS take care of business? We take care of our own, I’m sure the Navy guys had no problem launching some flotsam off the fantail while underway, Rad? You clear with me on this? We need to field day the barracks from the inside out.

    • radmax

:) It’s a different time now Romeo. This crap didn’t fly back in the pre-pc.
Still, nothin’ like a fantail flounder to break up a long deployment…or a nice berth party…very rare though. Some of the best people I’ve ever had the privilege to know…including jarheads. :) PS-in the 80′s most of the lifer chiefs were some hard ass MF’s. I think we are losing  somethin’ somewhere as time goes by…

      • Romeo

Hell yea baby-Blanket party on the flight deck! I watched a Bosun’s Mate Chief help some shoes tie a guy to the padeyes on the flight deck of the USS KittyHawk and scrub him down with aircraft soap cuz he wouldn’t take a shower and was stinking up the compartment. All of us Jarheads were standing there thinking that only we pulled that kind of krap! If I remember I had just made Staff and told all my troopies that this is what would happen if the squids got a hold of them for getting funky! Never had an issue with hygene and my ladies after that! Good times, missin’ the PI once again!
BTW, were you at Operation Just Cause (Grenada) in the 80′s? I took a  round thru my thigh during an insertion and it still hurts like a MoFo when it gets cold outside. Refuse to file for comp, the boys coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan (God Bless ‘em) need the bennies a lot more than I do, can still get around under my own steam. Heads up too, I am a Golden Shellback! How many leathernecks can admit that! We had a really cool Skipper driving the Tarawa that got us to the right spot to get it-We owe him! Take care bro, off to walk the puppy now, beer in hand!

        • radmax

Missed Grenada, in the British Isles training joint ops at the time. Sounds like fun…have a good pooch romp.

          • Romeo

Sweet, she krapped in the neighbors yard next to the sign that says trasoff and Humanitarian Aid Is Never A Crime! Gawd i love this dog! Daddies girl! Were you in the PI when Pinatubo popped? I was at Cubi Pt NAS when we got orders to get the fk outa dodge. Half our Squadron went to MCAS Iwakuni and the rest of us went haze gray and underway to Guam. That was some scary stuff, makes me realize what a joke algore and his global warming BS is. One volcano away from an ice age.
I did some off the record excercises with some chaps from the SAS/SBS/3rd Para and SEAL team 2/ Force Recon guys in Mauritius in the late 90′s before I retired and I will tell you, those guys were some serious operators, scary gents! Funny thing was all of them were talking up how wired the French Legionares were and all I was thinking of was how nice it would be back in Tucson riding my dirt bike around! Priorities I guess. Have a great weekend Max, been a pleasure reliving the past with you.energy max

  • Romeo

I can also state, without remorse, that I had no problem throwing a beating on any one who stepped out of line and endangered me or anyone in my unit. Our job was/is to defend our nation. Those of you who sit home and passively pound away at your keyboards while having not the slightest clue of what happens in a Fleet Marine Force, Army Battalion, or Navy Battle Group need to enlist, serve in a forward deployed combat unit and then pass judgement on what is right and what is wrong before your opinion will carry any weight whatsoever. Don’t want to serve your country? Then why not go to your local VA hospital and volunteer to help the warriors that have come home and need your compassion and help, think of them for a change instead of yourself and pay it forward. This sorry excuse for an Officer needs to be publicly crucified as a warning to any others in any branch that might be considering the same type of action. Just my two left over Phillipino Pesos (Ah, Subic Bay!).

    • leftfield

By any chance did the government equip you with an off switch?

      • tiponeill

Now Lefty – he’s a Veteran and so we are supposed to defer and “care”, remember ?
His opinion counts for so much more than ours, it’s a wonder we are allowed to speak at all.
How’s that poll on Veterans doing ? :)

        • Romeo

          STFU, both of ya, wankers.

        • leftfield

Tip, I really think this guy is pulling our chain.  Have you ever seen that pro wrestler, “Sgt. Slaughter”?  I suspect Romeo is really an anemic 12 year old with bad acne who lives a “second life” as Sgt. Slaughter.  I mean, absent traumatic head injury, nobody really talks like that; do they?

      • Romeo

Nope, unfortunately for you, my off switch is permanantly set to kick a$$ and take names so keep your head down otherwise you might end up as a notch Lefty. And trim that beard will ya? you look like Jerry Garcia on hormones. Next you’ll be carring a purse and wearing tampons you sissy! Semper Fi missy!

        • leftfield

Are you for real, Romeo, or are you a caricature of Sgt. Rock of comic book fame?  I mean, do people really talk like that in the military?  I think maybe you ought to take full advantage of the benefits coming you to help you readjust to civilian life.

BTW – I will be heading down to Ft. Huachuca this month for the annual protest against the School of the Americas (aka training for latin american death squads).  Can we count on your support?

          • mорское

hey lefty …….. you can always count on my support for the School of the Americas (Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation).

can i be of further service there lefty?

        • mорское

romeo ……. your “style” of posting does no one in the military, active or otherwise,  just service.

lefty has already proclaimed that he and i are enemies ……. actually a comforting thought.

          tippy is, well ……………..

at least post with comments that reflect some intelligence even if it is interrupted as prejudiced, judgmental and biased by the liberal/socialist/communist group.

          • Romeo

My  “style” is what it is and I earned the right through dedication, sweat, hard work and devotion to this country to say it as I see it. I was going to post some comments on the regurgitated vomit that lefty, tippy et al spew but you know what? In the end it really does not matter as the brainwashed will continue to babble as a justification of their cause and you and I will continue to refute their lies and it all adds up to nothing. Rather than waste my time pursuing the truth that they will never believe anyway I will call it a day and move on to bigger things, leaving it to others to stroke their egos from their pathetic lives revolving around a keyboard. BTW Lefty, you’re right(?) I am actually 9 yrs old and live with my mom in mombasa, kenya and dream of the day I can come to America and become president! REMF pogue, you better hope those MP’s in FT Huachuca don’t use you for a pinata. I’m done.

  • tiponeill

    Support the veterans :)

    • mорское

why tippy, why would we want to support seething murderers of the innocent and killers of freedom fighters?

  • in the desert

can you accept this analogy?  The Catholic church  has paid millions in damages to young men who were raped or sodimized..Fact.  Does that mean all priests are sodimizers?  Just because one nutball…who wanted out of the Army..does this make all Muslims murderers.. I think not…come on guys all you have to do is think

    • mорское

you have your concept of muslims. i have mine.

in the end, we will see whose concept was right.

  • windowframe

why must we always give the bad guy the benefit of the doubt?  in this case there are many eyewitnesses and the press continues to refer to him as the “alleged” shooter!  what a bunch of bs!

  • windowframe

in the desert………………..no,I don’t think all Muslims are murderers, just potential  murderers.  Is it Catholic priests that are going around killing every non Catholic they can get their hands on?  Can’t you see the difference???????????????

  • JerryAnn

JUDGEMENAL  JERKs?  Graymatters, do you talk to your editor with that mouth?  I find it unprofessional and diametrically opposed to what you are espousing.  Also to call FT Collins shooter crazed is not discriminatory, or politically incorrect.  he had to be crazed/crazy to do what he did.  Crazed with religious ferver, or with fear,  or spiritual pain, emotional pain, frustation.???  Any way you say it, he had a psychotic collapse, psychotic disconnect, nervous breakdown, it is the same.  I know what mental disease can to do a person and family.  But being politically correct isn’t what’s going to help.  Besides I never hears the expression anti-stigma.
