I strongly recommend anyone who is involved with a person with a mental illness go out and educate themselves about these disorders. Family to Family, offered at the local NAMI affiliate is a totally comprehensive course offered free of charge to family and friends. In it you not only learn about the illness and what to expect, but you learn communications skills and how to set boundaries and take care of yourself. My son had schizophrenia and I know how difficult it can be. Tucsonnative,

Since that time, I have seen bi-polar, hypermanic behavior in other people and it isn't pretty, it<em> is</em> misunderstood and though it is frightening for those who have it, it just might be worse at moments for those on the receiving end of it who truly, truly do not ask for or deserve the violence or craziness or threats. The more open people are about it, the better off we will all be.
