I think it's very important to consider that many women with post-partum depression and anxiety suffer from a hormonal imbalance and that any medical treatment should be directed as such versus just medicating with an SSRI (anti-depressant). Doctors will frequently prescribe SSRIs to "fix" this problem. What ends up happening is that the real problem (hormonal imbalance) is being masked and the woman continues to feel emotional, imbalanced, crazy. I know since I went through this myself and refused to be treated by my OB/GYN by his standard approach of prescribing an anti-depressant. I KNEW that my symptoms were not about a serotonin imbalance. I went to a naturopath, had my hormone levels tested and had that treated as they were, indeed, imbalanced. My irritability, low energy, anxiety have all been resolved with this treatment.

Susan, your words are beautiful and mean so much to all of us that loved her and were able to have her in our lives. Thank you for being the most wonderful BFF to Kathy. I feel blessed to have known her.

What a lovely tribute to a dear friend. Oh, Kathy! What a lovely young woman. She was so sweet and so much fun when we lived in Douglas. There was such a great group of friends that we all shared over the years. Wonderful years! Bless her family. I was sick to hear that she had passed away...brought back many memories.

I appreciated your blog from Australia. As a social worker who works in a recovery-oriented mental health program and also presented on my own recovery from bipolar disorder a few years ago at the World Psychiatric Association International Congress, I applaud you addressing the importance of a good support system for individuals experiencing mental health problems. Recovery requires a team effort.

Cheers,
Keith Mahar

Thank you for the blog. As an individual living with mental illness for over 30 years, I have seen the horrors and the beauty. It is so important that you mentioned support. Support comes from all 'cultural' extents; not just family as you or I might perceive it. Support comes from the community and from within - we need to cultivate both. NICE BLOG!

Ahh who can forget Margaret Heckler, assuring Americans that the blood transfusion supply was 100% safe.
Any form of healthcare was a disaster under Reagan
