Redemption: CDO 44 – 0 Over Saguaro

The Flip

The Phoenix media will call it an upset. Ka’Deem Carey called it “redemption.”

It wasn’t an upset. An upset is kicking a field goal with a few seconds left to win a game.

44-0 is not an upset – it’s a statement. I could use other language to describe it.

Complaining about traveling to Tucson to play falls on deaf ears to southern Arizonans. Complaining about players having to play both offense and defense is down right silly. Complaining about playing a bigger school (CDO enrollment 1,838 to Saguaro’s 1,476) borders on whining especially when your team had a 37 game win streak and won the last three state championships. One of those was a 23-21 win over CDO on a field goal at the end.

Instead of pulling out their violins Saguaro should have had a game plan against Carey. But I think the excuse road was their game plan of sorts.

Saguaro gave up 276 yards to a running back last week. This week they gave up 299 yards on 19 carries to Carey.

citizen cdo sag 066Guess what….it happened and it happened in Tucson.

Carey does not go down with one hit. He doesn’t go down with two hits.

There is a distinct feeling (and expectation) that he can score on every play.

If you aren’t prepared then Carey will burn you, “We played Dorado football. This was payback for the state championship game. We (Josh Robbins) talked to the team and told them to help us fill the void we felt after the loss.”

“The media said I guaranteed a win. I didn’t really. I just told my team to help with this win.”

And they did.

Safety and captain Jared Tevis lead the Dorado defense. Tevis pitched a shutout. Zero points.

Saguaro had a first and goal at the four yard line to start the second quarter. They missed a 33 yard field goal four plays later. That was as close as Saguaro got all night.

Tevis had two interceptions. He returned one for a touchdown. Oh, note to Saguaro coach John Sanders, Tevis also played on offense.

It was his touchdown on an interception with 3:33 left in the first half that basically put Saguaro away as the Dorados went into the locker room leading 17-0.

CDO went up 3-0 with 7:50 left in the second quarter on a drive that included a 19 yard pass play to Robbins and a 37 yard field goal by Tilghman Harvey.

Robbins caught a touchdown pass during the state championship game two years ago. Now he is deep in recruiting battles. His father played at Arizona but Robbins told me he hasn’t put pressure on him to go to the UA. “He left it up to me. He told me he’d back me 100%.”

What matters most to Robbins now is that CDO is on top. Despite going in leading Saguaro in Power Points (36.5 to 33.05), the print media portrayed CDO as an underdog.

I predicted a 27-0 win by CDO.

I guess I underestimated CDO by two touchdowns.

“This was redemption. We finally got it. It feels good to be on top,” Robbins.

Carey scored his first touchdown with 3:41 left in the first half to make the game 9-0 on a flip that had his feet sticking straight up in the air as he crossed the goal line.

The touchdown by Tevis ended the first half scoring 17-0.

Saguaro had a reputation for offense. That offense featured two snaps over the quarterback’s head tonight.

The one in the third quarter forced them into a fourth and 28 from their own 31 yard line.

Saguaro got off a booming punt and CDO took over at their 20. An illegal procedure call made it 1-15 from the 15. Carey broke several tackles and had his second touchdown 85 yards later.

24-0.

Carey ran for a 31 yard touchdown some two minutes later to bring the score to 30-0 after a failed extra point.

He had 242 yards and three scores at this point.

CDO got the ball back after another failed Saguaro drive. Mike Lewis completed an 11 yard pass to Eddie Smith on a third down play to bring the ball to the 43 yard line.

Carey just needed one more touch to score his fourth touchdown – this one from 57 yards out.

37-0.

299 yards on 19 carries.

Tevis got his second interception on Saguaro’s next drive and scored again but the touchdown was brought back due to a holding call.

Jason McBrayer replaced Lewis at QB and punched the ball in himself making the score 44-0 with 8:42 left in the game.

CDO’s second and third team preserved the shutout the rest of the way.

Guess who else played both ways? Bobby Henkel had two more sacks for CDO and a few catches from his running back position.

“This was our best defensive performance of the year. This was big for our team and for our city,” Coach Dustin Peace.

“We didn’t get Carey his 300 yards because we run a class program. We see something new from him every week…Tevis was huge on defense and gave us our shutout. He is surrounded by big names but now he made a name for himself.”

When asked about Saguaro’s future Peace predicted they would be back and ready.

Saguaro must watch the Power Rankings now because they may wind up on the same side of the bracket as CDO preventing a rematch in the championship game.

I’m guessing CDO wants Saguaro to win the rest of their games.

You can knock down a heavy weight champion but you must knock him out to take his crown away.

I just hope Saguaro enjoyed their drive back up to Scottsdale.

NOTES:

Saguaro brought about 100 fans on that long drive down to Tucson.

The Cross Middle School Band played before the game.  I’ve heard quite a few middle school bands doing this thing and I’d have to say they are the best.

Ran into the Tevis family. Their other son is Aaron and he is a star for Boise State.  They told me he was named captian.

You can see a vidoe of how hard Aaron hits here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAqlmBKUsEw

Aaron has eaten at my house – I already know what kind of hitter he is.

Carey flipped again.  You can catch his flip as a freshman here:

    Andy…
I’d be interested in knowing how many CDO players (if any) transferred in under open enrollment.

Whoa!  Whoa!  Let’s back up the reel a frame or two.  There.  Right…there.  Nikes.  No. 25.  Ka’Deem Carey.

    Hmmm…

Let’s take stock and inventory: Phil Knight – Nike founder, mega-donor and spiritual godfather to the Oregon Ducks.  And…Ka’Deem Carey outfitter?

    Hmmm…

Does Knight similarly induce, err, clothe all Dorados?  The entire Southern Division?  How about the whole AIA?  How legit, Andy, is this not so legit-looking way of recruiting?

the problem with a blog like this is that it’s written with a sophomoric approach instead of being balanced. Some of us  who read blogs grind their teeth over homerism like this. i guess that’s why you don’t get paid for writing blogs most of the time. Anybody can do it.

  • faithnzen-dejas!

Hey momo, if it’s so easy, why haven’t you done it.  And since when do you speak for people who read blogs?  I read blogs and I have the power to choose what to read and what not to read.  And I certainly don’t choose you or anyone as my rep.

This beautiful world of ours is made up of complainers, critics, planners and doers.  If you don’t plan or do, you have no business complaining or criticizing.

This is TucsonCitizen.com.  It’s meant to cover Tucson sports in general, which it does.  If you’re looking for something different, well, keep looking.  Or, better yet, build your own site.

I guess I’m also trying to figure out what exactly you’re getting at.  What do you mean by wanting more “balance”?  That might help you and me.  Not to mention the rest of us, and there are more than just a few of us who check in here everyday.

Dataport – I can check on the open enrollment issue but it might be non pubkic info as student’s addresses aren’t public records.  My guess is that Scttsdale Saguaro has the same issue.

Shoe issue:  You can order shoes with your name on them through many companies and I’ve seen baseball players and softball players order them.
Momo:  You are the same person who tried to say track running events aren’t measured in meters.

While you are welcome to comment, please get informed first.

This is a blog article and an opinion piece.

Your response is EXACTLY the kind of sour grape/excuse nonsense that I exposed.

Thanks for giving my readers another example.

I give “balance” when covering two local teams.

You have your own blog at the Arizona Republic.  That blog is NEVER balanced.

    Balance?

here is an example of balanced reporting and balanced blogging:

    http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/Richardobert/64042

Where did the Arizona Republic get this notion that CDO was ranked second to Saguaro when CDO was actually ahead of Saguaro in Power Points?  That’s right, form its own ranking.  Homerism.

And, what are we to make of a high school coach who openly talks about other players to the media and then makes excuses before a game?

Funny the Saguaro fans call CDO opponents “Pop Warner” material when CDO has a higher ranking and CDO killed Saguaro.

I am sitting here smiling……i don’t really follow high school football too closely, but close enough to consider myself  ”informed ignorant” on the matter.
It appears to me the Tucson high schools always travel to the Valley to play the games, especially when it comes to the state playoffs. This gives the teams in the Phoenix area a distinct advantage, the game times are usually at  inconvenient  times during the week,  so most parents and fans cannot attend. Essentially giving the Phoenix teams a home game.
It was nice to read Andy’s balanced piece about the C.D.O./Saguaro game. It especially made me smile to see the Tucson team,  kick Saguaros ass and send them back whining and making excuses.
Come on back anytime Saguaro for some more Tucson hospitality.
