    Coming Sunday night:

    5A I & II swim all-stars

    1A-3A football all-stars

    5A-1A Volleyball all-stars

In light of upcoming decisions regarding volleyball all-star honors I just wanted to give some input about the big school players.  Statistically, Maddie Bushman (4A-1 Sonoran), Alyssa Mort (5A-Southern), Erin Bradley (4A-2 Gila), Taylor Lane (4A-2 Gila), and Zanna Sarama (5A-Southern) were the top five hitters in the city.  Jacquie Cason of 4A-1 Kino was sixth.  It is worth noting that Bushman missed two matches and most of a third with a rolled ankle, and she still dominated the hitting category.

Statistically, the best setters from each region were Czarina Schutt (5A-Southern), Kerry Lane (4A-2 Gila), Liz Graham (4A-1 Kino), and Elizabeth Mata (4A-1 Sonoran).  Holly Bainbridge and Haley Howell were also in the top 5 for all classes in this category (both from 5A-Southern).

Defensively the statistical leaders in digs for each region were Liz Romero (5A-Southern – she dominated this category), Vanessa Acosta (4A-2 Gila), Kayla Henry (4A-1 Sonoran),  and Tiana Fox (4A-1 Kino).

Crossover players from the top hitters group  who were also in the top 25 for digs in all classes included Taylor Lane, Maddie Bushman, Erin Bradley, and Zana Sarama.

Based on statistics, players of the year for each region would be:
Liz Romero or Czarina Schutt for 5A-Southern (Romero led all classes in digs and Schutt led all classes in assists but edge has to go to Romero who had far more digs than anyone else in her category).

    Maddie Bushman (4A-1 Sonoran).

I would give 4A-1 Kino region MVP awards to Zoe Calhoun and Jacquie Cason.  Calhoun was 7th in Southern Arizona in setting and Cason was 6th in kills.  Both contributed to the other’s success and they made a very potent combination.

4A-2 Gila could go to Erin Bradley or Taylor Lane who were both outstanding on offense and defense for their Amphi team. Emily Graham was also good on both sides of the ball.

Southern Arizona Player of the Year should go to Maddie Bushman of Sabino. Anyone watching prep volleyball this year knows Bushman is the most consistent, efficient, and dominant offensive and defensive combination. In addition, Bushman was the leading hitter in S. Arizona last year as well, and this year she is the only returning 1st team all-southern Arizona player.

It is interesting to note that most of the top players in S. Arizona have been training with Chris Gonzalez at volleyball club Dinamo.  Hats off to all the great coaches and players who made this the best season of prep volleyball in many years.

I think someone needs to teach stats to some of the stat takers. The discrepancies between the number one in digs vs all the rest are extremely disproportionate.

I like your list for the most part – the only thing i’d like to warn about are counting the number of kills, blocks, digs etc.  because some players collected them while playing 5 sets continuously while others played on teams that dominated, winning in 3 sets.  The stats should be per set.  That’s why I listed the stats vs. each team with how many sets it took.

And I don’t see Michaela on your list anywhere…….

If you do a search for Dinamo you will see I did a story on their team at Nationals and in Russia.

“Selections are based on staff observations, with consultation from area coaches”

This is the criteria for end-of-season vball accolades in the Star. This translates to what Bill Lang says about Bill Lang’s players – ditto Kramkowski. The afterglow of Chris Gonzalez worship will also rank high this year (Note the players who have been the focus of the Star’s individual profiles this season).

Then it will be stats-especially kills. Not hitting percentage or some comprehensive breakdown, just volume of kills.  And just how reliable and standardized are the practices for recording and posting stats?  Take a look at last season’s Mountain View/Boulder Creek match. Mountain View players racked up 134 points on kills, blocks and aces alone. The team only scored 104 total points in the five set match. And these game stats weren’t loaded until right at the end of the season.

This kind of deep analysis helped give us last year’s all Southern Arizona teams. But who was really the best player in southern Arizona in 2008? It was New Mexico State’s Stephanie Ziegler who split much of her season between setter and hitter because her team needed her in those roles.  And Tucson’s vball pundits made her a third team selection.

If these picks were based on the votes of all the region’s coaches, that would be much more fair.  ”The observations of media staff and input from coaches,” is a crappy way to do end-of-season honors, but it’s probably the most expeditious way to meet a deadline and get back to UA basketball.

I appreciated the comments about how to evaluate the players more fairly. Unfortunately in high school sports we don’t have a way to standardize the record keeping and most coaching staffs don’t have resources to keep track of statistics beyond those being reported (attempts, errors, percentages, etc.).  With regard to some players racking up statistics by playing more 4 or 5 set matches, I quickly looked at the leaderboards and most of the statistical leaders I mentioned earlier came from dominant teams that usually won in 3 sets (Schutt from Tucson High and Romero from Sunnyside were notable exceptions).   Although Michaela Christiansen is a very respectable player by any assessment method, she was not included in my initial list because she was not in the top 5 for any statistical category despite having more matches to accrue statistics than girls from other regions (5A-Southern has stats added in from their region tournament).

I beg to differ on Michaela.  People have to go beyond pulling for their own players and look at the performances against the top teams gainst their conference and region opponents.

When some one says she is just a “repsectable” player then one has to wonder.

Having looked at all the stats one can only wonder if the AIA needs to hold a summit on how to score kills, digs and assists.

I also agree with the previous response that highschool coaches should not be in total control of the all-star teams. (I have  plenty of emails questionning if one coach picked the softball all-stars last year).

I can’t speak for other outlets but that will not happen at the Citizen.

If it did in the past then I apologize because I was not here.

I also like to break down between each level rather than one huge team for “big” schools and one team for “small” teams – that comes off as lazy.

I will also stay away from “honorable mention” which is only a way for coaches to list two-three of their players on their teams.  Also a sign of being lazy I think.

Im no bracket expert but, there maybe  something wrong with the the AIA’s 4AI Vball and Football brackets.  Sahuaro#15 plays Cactus Shadows #2 in both sports!!   I dont believe the teams that Sahuaro Vball jumped over in the Power Points will be too happy they did not make the playoffs, i.e. Flowing Wells. If I am wrong WE will be on our way to Phoenix to support the Cougar girls.  If I am right do you think the AIA will give me a prize?

I am no bracket expert but, looks like there is  a big Ooops in the Vball and Football brackets.  Sahuaro #15 plays #2 Cactus Shadows in both sports!! I believe the teams our Cougar Girls jumped over in the Power Points may not be very happy, i.e. Flowing Wells.   If I am wrong we will be on our way to Phoenix to support the Vball Cougs next week. If I am correct do you think the AIA will give me a prize in appreciation.

    Andy:
Thanks for covering prep volleyball.  I like the honorable mention category for post-season honors.  That way more hard working girls get recognition they might not have received as roll players on their teams.
