Volleyball & Football Playoff Results Saturday – Empire Moves On
VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS
1A: Saturday
St. David lost to Valley Lutheran 3-1 to finish in third place. Valley Lutheran went on to win the state championship.
FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS:
3A: Saturday
Empire beat Safford 44-18 and will play 14 seed Florence next Saturday at 4 pm. Empire does not get to host the next game even though they are a 6 seed because the AIA does not allow 3A teams to host the second round.
My guess because of the travel distances. But I find it interesting that the games will be played in the Phoenix area where most of the teams play.
The game will be played at Williams Field in Gilbert.

You said, “I find it interesting that the games will be played in the Phoenix area where most of the teams play.” Here’s a breakdown of where the teams play:
East: Alchesay, Blue Ridge, Payson, Round Valley, Show Low, Snowflake
North: Chinle, Ganado, Holbrook, Monument Valley, Tuba City, Window Rock, Winslow
South: Coolidge, Empire, Florence, Fountain Hills, Globe, Safford, San Tan Foothills, Santa Cruz
West: Chino Valley, Estrella Foothills, Parker, River Valley, Sedona, South Pointe, Wickenburg
I’m not sure why you think most teams play in Phoenix?

You would have a good point until people realize 3A is the ONLY divison that does not allow teams to host the second round.
There are more 1A teams and they travel greater distances yet they reward teams in the second round- same for 2A.
We have to ask ourselves which teams benefit from how 3A runs their playoffs.
The emergence of Empire as a state power should change things.
And, yes, the historical powers in 3A do play in Phoenix – so what. The first “A” in AIA stands for Arizona not Maricopa County.
