2009 5A I SWIM & DIVE
TUCSONCITIZEN.COM SOUTHERN ARIZONA ALL-STARS

Girls Coach of the Year: Sam Busch, Salpointe
Boys Coach of the Year: Matt Hough, Salpointe

Girl Swimmers of the Year: Stephanie Sinn & Miranda Lyle
Boy Swimmers of the Year: Alex Leighton, Roger Page & Tyler Mattingly
Girls Diver of the Year: Taylor Trujillo
Boys Diver of the Year: Kevin Steffes

This was probably one of the most difficult selections I’ve had to make this fall. There were no clear cut state champions or one single dominate swimmer in this division.

In many ways that is a testament to Salpointe’s swim team – it was team effort for both the girls and the boys.

If just one part wasn’t swimming well then there would be obvious ripple effect.

That said, Stephanie Sinn and Miranda Lyle set themselves higher by being a part of four of the top times in this division in either an individual event or a relay.

Stephanie Sinn
200 Medley Relay, 200 IM, 100 Breast, 400 Free Relay & 500 Free.  I added her time in for the 500 Free (Thanks to an alert reader), giving Sinn top times in 5 events.  Sinn also edged out Ironwood Ridge sensation Sara Borendame to win the Southern Region Breaststroke championship. We should have known, she came in third place in the La Jolla Rough Water competition when she was only 12.

Miranda Lyle
200 Free, 100 Fly, 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay. Lyle is only a junior. Even though a top time was found for Sinn in the 500 Free, I’m keeping Lyle right here where she belongs. With the emergence of sophomore Payton Stauch and freshman Laura Graziano, Lyle should dominate next year as the leader of the team.

Alex Leighton
200 Medley Relay, 100 Fly, 200 Free Relay and 100 Back. I guess your standards are high when your mom was an Olympian in your sport. He has two more years at Salpointe. He is no longer the young sensation. He must now become a leader.

Roger Page
200 Medley Relay, 200IM, 100 Free and 400 Free Relay. He was important part of the region championship. Every swimmer on his relays is coming back next year.

Tyler Mattingly
200 Free, 500 Free, 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay. He was constantly in the top if my list of great times on distance events. The fact that he was only a sophomore only adds to accomplishment.

Taylor Trujillo
Little sister to Pima softball pitcher Jordan and tops in diving. The sole diver for Southern Arizona at state.

Kevin Steffes
One of a handful of divers in our area. He was able to break into the top 20 for the state and he is number one in this division.

Girls Coach of the Year: Amy Mayhew
Boys Coach of the Year: Mike Ward

Girl Swimmers of the Year: Megan McGovern
Boy Swimmers of the Year: Aaron Weintraub
Girls Diver of the Year: Kaitlyn McLeod
Boys Diver of the Year: Jay Irwin

Megan McGovern
200 Medley Relay, 200 IM, 100 Free, 100 Back and 400 Free Relay. Because swimmers can only swim in four events during competition, many stay with four at all times. Megan happens to have a top time in five events, including relays and….she is a freshman (or was). Alexandra Nickles is also a freshman and she figured in four events.

Aaron Weintraub
200 Medley Relay, 50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Back and 400 Free Relay. Like McGovern, Weintraub also takes part in five events. The senior was a major part of their championship season last year. He will be missed. Reed Patterson will be ready. The sophomore figured in four events.

Kaitlyn McLeod
Back to back state championships. How about three in a row for the powerful Rincon dive team?

Jay Irwin
Irwin takes home top honors in his last year with Rincon.

I hope there are only a few errors.  My notebook for swim/dive got very confusing but I tried to take into account times for the whole year.

  • Matt Parker

    Andy, when do you sleep?

    Good work

  • jackie

thank you for the wonderful recognition you have given to salpointe, a small team that works very hard! and a great group of kids.

  • Ted

Nice compilation, congrats on a job well done.  I would say that in this system when you count relays, a dominant swimmer with better relative times and finishes  in State Champs, who may have  even regional or state records, but who swims on a weaker team could finish behind a 4 or 5 event person.  I didn’t see that as an issue this year.  Thanks for your efforts Andy!

  • splash

Ted – You are rightm this is an incredible compilation and a great job by Andy.  But, I am not following you.    ” would say that in this system when you count relays, a dominant swimmer with better relative times and finishes  in State Champs, who may have  even regional or state records, but who swims on a weaker team could finish behind a 4 or 5 event person”  what does that mean?

  • Ted

These swimmers of the year are based on finishing first in the region in 4 or 5 events – in each case a relay counted for two of the 4 or 5 top finishes.  THe potential problem in this system – a  stellar swimmer for Tucson High breaks 2 state records but only figures in those 2 events because of the stronger Salpointe relay teams would not receive the award.  As I said, it didn’t happen this year, but it could in the future.  Comparing the apples to oranges of different strokes can be ranked using USA Power Points as well. My 2 cents.

  • SWIM

A swimmer can only participate in four races; 2 individual /2 relays or 1 individual/3 relays. (4 events total)
*State/Regionals (even though covers two days) is considered one meet. A swimmer can only score in four races.
Also…These top 3 swimmers are based on season best times, not top finishes at regionals/state
example: 5A I 100 Breaststroke (roger page did not swim this at regionals)
    Andy did his homework…

  • http://tucsoncitizen.com Andy Morales

If we didn’t count relays then what do we do with Michael Phelps and his 8 medals?

It’s true that he depended on a strong team to win relays but they also depended on him.

I was amazed that there are several swimmers here who have great times in 5 or 6 events but you can only compete in 4 total in a meet.

The Bleyl’s come to mind where they could have won a few other championships but were confined by the 4 event rule.

Anyway, swim season was fun for me and now I have all these names in my head……..

Please keep me informed on recruiting news and club/USA swim events.

    Andy

  • splash

Thanks for explaining what you meant Ted.  I understand and agree.   I can give you some examples of some truly dominate swimmers that fit your scenario…not state records, but Raz Luker for one.

I have to mention that this is the reason Salpointe Lady Lancers were so special.  None of the ladies placed in Championship finals, but all the the relays did.  Stronger as a team than individually.

Andy …you bet we will :)  thanks for giving so many swimmers the recognition they deserve.

  • Ted

Andy – Phelps was on an all-star team.  If Michael Phelps had been swimming for Santa Rita this year he would not have been swimmer of the year here  even though he set world records as they would not have been the top relay teams even with his splits.  No problem with your method this year as I see it but IMHO remarkable swimmers who attend a school with a weak swim team should not be left out of consideration. Food for thought. Thanks again for the coverage.

  • SWIM

    Ted,
2 out 3 of the 5A I boy swimmers were faster than all the boy swimmers in 5A I, 5A II, 4 A I, and 4A II in their respected events throughout the year and after the completion of regional/state meets. Now SC’s relays were not faster than foothills, but were faster than CDO, Sabino, Rincon, IR, SAH, etc..
I believe Andy nows his stuff and if he saw a kid from Cholla break the state record, win regionals in his/her events, and was top 3 in state; despite their relay finishes, that individual has a good chance as any, to be swimmer of the year.

  • Ted

Swim – you can drop the teaching mode as I know swimming pretty well and I am making a point about the system not Salpointe versus the world as you seem to feel.
Salpointe High did not have a single male swimmer with a top time  if you combine the divisions – I am not sure what you are trying to say and that is irrelevant to this discussion.
This the medley relay final from states -  as you can clearly see you are incorrect.
