Luke Davis - From the Northwest Explorer

“My name is Luke Davis. I’ve always loved to write, on anything and everything, but in college I became fascinated with the field of journalism.” From Luke’s blog.

Luke was only 30 years old. I know I can speak for the entire Tucson Citizen family when I say his wife and family are in our thoughts and prayers.

People who are way smarter than me might quote from scripture or from verse to help you with your loss but I am only able to talk about Luke as a colleague. I know my words are so inadequate.

Luke had his whole life ahead of him. It is the memory of what he was and the dream of what he might have been that makes this so difficult to understand.

I only spoke with Luke once. It was during a CDO football game.

He was a nice guy and he asked me how the Citizen was doing.

I enjoyed his work at the Citizen where he worked general news and later with the Northwest Explorer where he finally got to work with sports. It was his self-described passion. I looked forward to his take on a game that we both covered.

Luke died last Saturday in a collision on I-10 near Picacho Peak. It was reported that he was on his way to watch a Coyotes game with his wife Nikki.

Nikki was also in the car when it was hit by another car that crossed over the medium. She is recovering from her injuries.

You can see much of Luke’s work at his blog: http://lukemdavis.wordpress.com/

He also kept a twitter account where he filed his last sports report at 8:45 pm on November 13:

“Another N. Side football team goes down: Pusch Ridge loses to Yuma Catholic 28-7 in the quarterfinals of 2A playoff action.”

You can read a great story on Luke at his newspaper:

I’m going to cover the CDO football game in his honor.

Luke and I were “competitors” only in the sense that we worked for papers that often went after the same advertisers. We covered some of the same games and while I won’t pretend to know him well, he seemed like a good guy. R.I.P.

I knew Luke as a customer.  I only met him only twice, and it was over two years ago that I last saw him.  I can’t remember the bartender at the bar I went to last week, but I still remember Luke.  He was such a genuine, warm guy.  Just wanted to convey to Luke’s family my condolences for their loss.
