Dylan Kelly scored two goals against 8 seed Mesquite to send top seed Salpointe to the semifinals of the boys 5A I state championship.

The sophomore forward scored both of his goals in the first 20 minutes of the match and then played the rest of the game chasing a hat trick.

“I spent the second half trying for the third goal but I couldn’t convert on my chances,” said Kelly.

“My best chance was a breakaway but their goalie made a great save.”

Most of the game was played in an attack mode by Salpointe, a style that Mesquite could not defend. Creating opportunities is something Salpointe coach Wolfgang Weber was very happy with after the match.

“We did what we needed to do. We created some great opportunities to score. We have a great ability to create chances.”

One of those opportunities came early as Kelly scored his first goal on a pass from senior captain Blake Brennan that found its way across the box in the 5th minute. “The pass missed a few players and when it missed the last one I took my shot,” said Kelly.

He scored again on a header on a pass from junior Alex Brown in the 20th minute.

Salpointe had numerous chances from there but could not finish. Mesquite could not get much of anything going until Salpointe was called for a hand ball in the 74th minute while in the box.

Ben Eyde says he still gets nervous defending penalty kicks – something he said he’s done since he was about six years old. But it was instinct and practice that caused him to anticipate which way Mesquite senior Dane Wertz was going to shoot.

“Our coaches had us prepared for everything they threw at us,” said Eyde. “It was a good shot but our defense held today.”

Mesquite was deflated after Eyde stuffed their one good attempt at a score but the block actually energized Salpointe to take a few more shots on goal.

Weber told his team to enjoy the weekend. “This was even better that it was a shut out,” Weber to his team after the game. We are getting close to something very special.”

Salpointe will play 5 seed Corona del Sol on Wednesday, February 10 at 5 p.m. The game will be at Campo Verde High School in Gilbert.

Salpointe is playing without the services of freshman Christian Garcia who broke his collar bone at Regionals. Garcia is a player Weber calls one of the best in the state for a freshman.

“Our losses were early in the year,” said Weber. “The lessons we learned were valuable. The younger players have blended with the team and it has given us something extra.”

It’s been a while since top seeds were able to host the second round in 5A soccer. Two years ago Salpointe was the 3 seed but had to travel to Tempe to play 11 seed Corona del Sol at 10 a.m. The Lancers lost that match 2-1 in what amounted to a home game for Corona del Sol.

Now for the rematch.
