Ray Morales heads to national power Sioux Falls

Catalina star running back Ray Morales (no relation) rushed for 1,252 yards (6.59) last year and scored 15 touchdowns. His effort was more than enough to earn the top spot on our TucsonCitizen.com 4A-II First Team at the running back position.

Morales will sign with NAIA power University of Sioux Falls, South Dakota some time this week.

How good is Sioux Falls?

The school has won five national championships and will be making the move to NCAA Division II by 2011.

The Cougars of Sioux Falls lost their head coach, Kalen DeBoer, on February 5 when he resigned to become the offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois University. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb will be promoted to interim head coach and will be included in the pool of candidates in the search that will begin immediately, according to the university.

During his five year tenure as head coach DeBoer guided the Cougars to undefeated national championship seasons in 2006, 2008 and 2009 and compiled a 67-3 overall record. He took home a runner-up trophy in 2007.

This team is so dominant that, in their last 20 games, only four teams have managed to score 10 points against the Cougars and just one running back gained 50 yards.

Morales also caught for 233 yards (12.94) and collected an interception for the Trojans.
