Coach of the year?

How can one pick between a “young” architect of a five-guard system with a bench deep bench, ready to perform at a high pace for 32 minutes, and the “master” who devised a game plan to beat that system not once, but twice?

Amphitheater only had three losses this year – two were at the hands of Santa Rita. To make it more precise, Amphi went 3-2 over its last five games with Santa Rita being the ones responsible for the losses.

Amphi destroyed Santa Rita in their first game on January 19. The score was 90-76.

Then, Santa Rita beat Amphi to end the regular season and then to win a state championship.

This was Amphitheater’s best chance to win a state championship – it was Santa Rita’s second title in six tries with the last four coming in a row.

The 2010 championship was everything it was built up to be. We had one of the best players in Arizona going against one of the best teams in Arizona.

Terrell Stoglin is on his way to Maryland and the Phoenix media may slight him in favor of a player who plays against 3A competition for state player of the year.

Stoglin scored 90 points against Amphi this year – a 30 point average.

Aia365.com has the game available online for those who missed the chance to see this game in person. The announcer declared Santa Rita the champions way too early, not knowing that Amphi would get one last shot.

You will see Malcolm Millner’s last-second shot glance off the rim and just miss – inches from a state championship.

Ben Hurley has done away with the notion that teams must a center and two forwards and Jim Ferguson has raised the bar of consistency.

I know this is your opinion, and I agree in some areas but not in others.
Hands down, Stoglin deserves player of the year, and in my opinion, he deserves it for the whole state of Arizona.  Mike Perez and Bryce Cotton also had outstanding years.  If you look at your first and second team selections for Southern Arizona, you have nine 4A players and only one 5A player.  Yes, I know 4A had some great players, but there were a few 5A southern region players that proved themselves worthy of all city honors.  Matt Walter had a solid senior year with about 15+ ppg and 10 rpg, but according to maxpreps.com, he was out scored and out rebounded by Billy Morrison.  Also from Rincon, Juan Pablo Favela outscored Walter.  Two more great players, in 5AI,  Shakir Smith and Sama Taku also outscored Walter.  I just don’t see how he was your pick for best player in 5AII.  Also you have Tim Derksen on your first team?  Do you really think he’s one of the five best players in all of Southern AZ?  He is not a bad little shooting guard, he was on a great team who averaged over 80 points a game, but I wouldn’t put him ahead of Smith, Taku, Morrison, or Favela.  I agree that Medford is a spectacular and pretty unselfish guard, only a junior, but I’m not sure if he’s one of the five best overall players in the city. Though I do look forward to seeing him take over after Stoglin is in Maryland.  Matt Korcheck has the potential to be a dominating player, but the best game I ever saw him play was in the summer after his sophomore year.   Sabino didn’t utilize him well at all, but he really didn’t produce all too much this year.  Another big man outscored and outrebounded by Rincon’s Morrison.  Klewer didn’t have a spectacular senior year either in my opinion.  Foothills really played team basketball, but he still only averaged about 13 points per contest – Not a top 10 player in southern AZ.  Overall, I’d just like to see how you selected these teams, because based on stats and seeing all of these players play, I’d make some changes to your lineup.

I think we could all pick ten different top 1o players and they would all be correct.

All the players you mention are recognized in their conferences.  This is the most complete list I have seen so far.

I’m also glad these aren’t based on stats only.

I think Chris Klassen at Palo Verde should have at least received some acknowledgment from you regarding Coach of the Year. He took over for David Gin , but was already essentially the coach of the Titans because Gin never really did anything coaching wise (I mean doing jumping jacks for messing up during practice, really Gin?) and Klassen called all the plays. He finally takes over and guides the players he has brought up since they were freshman to a tournament win in Prescott that involved other Tucson teams like Pueblo, and some out of state teams, and a win over rival Santa Rita for the first time in quite some time, actually making this rivalry an actual one. They made it all the way to the final 4 this year, something that has not happened at PV in many years.  Next year they lose 4 out of 5 starters, but with Dorian Paige still there to anchor them down, and numerous talented players coming from the ranks of a 3 loss JV team, be on the lookout for the Titans next year.

Also Devante Harkins LED THE STATE in assists, one again he LED THE STATE i assists, and had a 4-1 A/TO Ratio, yet Amphi players get all the shine, even 2 players from DOUGLAS made 2nd team, but not him? Hmmm.
