Congratulations to all Southern Arizona players in this prestigious list. Good Luck rest of the season and beyond. Can’t  wait to see some future Wildcats as well and hoping we do not lose them in the draft.

Just a minor correction… Preston Jamison is now at Catalina Foothills and doing well.

    Go Lancers!

I just have to say this…. Although Vicente Teran has signed with Tennessee, he was never even (if healthy) going to be CDO’s number 1 starter. It’s too bad Bubba Metz (CDO’s #1) has been so overlooked that he is going to Western New Mexico on a golf scholarship. The guy is 6’3, great body, throws 86-88mph, and throws his fastball, curveball, slider, and change up for strikes. He is one of the most dominate pitchers I have seen this year and lets not forget he won the 4A1 state championship game with 15-5 victory over #1 Cactus last year. I’m so tired of these rankings of players where the information is so wrong. Dylan Ruggeroli from Sabino??? I mean no disrespect but really??? Its time these so called scouts that know everything come out and watch a high school game instead of basing everything on summer ball where everything is so relaxed, and only the wealthy players are seen. Has anyone come out to CDO and watched a game where every hitter, 1-9 has the capability of putting up big numbers. They are 17-1 and are clearly the most dominate team in the state.,  and the only person being recruited is Vicente who has only one start this year! Wake up people, unbelievable!

    Mr. Decker,

I respect your opinion but can you clarify the statement that “ONLY WEALTHY PLAYERS ARE SEEN.” CDO has always been considered the best baseball program in the Southern parts of the state and had the most MLB players from any program. With that said, I would expect that  most MLB/college  scouts would give a strong look at the team year in and year out and they would be on the radar. From my limited understanding, the list was made irregardless if you have attended a Perfect Game event or not so the statement above may not be entirely accurate. It is up to the players how to market themselves and back it up.  The old saying that ” If you are good, they will come” is not a reflection on what is going on in the baseball industry, you will need to be more pro-active these days. Did you take into account some parents saving their money so they can send their son to a showcase and /or tournaments to get seen. They are not all WEALTHY but probably picked the right ones to get into.

Anyways, I know CDO will be good and they are still going to be  tough in the playoffs. Best of luck with the players in their quest to go to the next level.

Lancers4life, I do understand your point and may have gone a little overboard with the “only the wealthy players are seen” comment. It just seems like so many of these polls and rankings are based on those tournaments or showcases that charge fees for players to be in during the summer. Don’t get me wrong, I do understand that there is overhead and equipment that need to be payed for, but its almost like they are saying you need to pay to be seen. I don’t want to single out a player, but someone like Bubba Metz,  who plays a lot of  golf  during the summer because his season starts in the fall, doesn’t have a chance just because he chose to play two sports  in high school.  CDO has a lot of players this year that are great baseball players but don’t constrict themselves to only baseball during the summer. I am very aware of the number of college and pro players CDO has turned  out over the years, but I will say most to none of them were recruited or seen during the summer. It was what they did in the high school season that counted. I used to be a big believer in the “if you are good they will find you” mentality until I watched this team play and discovered no one was looking at any of them. The one point I will make is that Vicente hardly pitched at all last year and only has one start this year. This is no knock on him because I believe he has great potential and an incredible future ahead of him, but he really hasn’t done much on the mound yet to earn the accolades.

Sadly, the only major sport left that relies on High School is football and even they are starting to turn to combines.

I’ve spent thousands of dollars to take one of my daughters to softball showcases so there is an aspect of the families not being able to afford the multiple trips being shut out of recruiting.

My oldest daughter wanted to play at the highest gold level of club volleyball but the $900 a month for that sport put it out of reach for us yet she still made first and second teams as a setter.

Another thing to add is that not all the wealth in the world can buy talent. JMHO.

Mr. Zwart,  This list was published for SOUTHERN ARIZONA readers and as such it only listed players that go to SOUTHERN ARIZONA high schools or players that are committed to UNIVERSITY of ARIZONA which is located in SOUTHERN ARIZONA.  Did you notice that the only Phoenix area players listed are committed to UofA?  Therefore there was no slight to your son or the other Mingus player as neither of them are committed to U of A.

Mr Decker,  Wow!  It’s fine to get on here and promote a kid like Metz that you feel may have been overlooked in the recruiting process – but it’s really very tacky of you to single out two players like you did.  And one of them is even Bubba’s own teammate. You could have made your point about Metz without ever mentioning anyone else by name.

People need to realize that colleges rarely watch High School games during the regular season.  Summer and Fall Ball are the most crucial times for college recruiting – especially the summer after your Junior year.  If you have ever seen top level summer baseball, you would understand that it is not relaxed and there are plenty of college coaches in attendence.  If this kind of talent is being so overlooked at CDO, maybe the coaching staff is not doing everything they can to promote their own players????

Mr. Zwart, this site has always been a service for Southern Arizona athletes and teams.

    Thanks for your interest.

I will forward the list to our sister site (azcentral.com) as they cover mostly Phoenix area teams.

Morales,  in case you missed the news, the Republic is now teamed up with the Star. They are not your “sister site.” They have been running Arizona Daily Star stories and the Star is also sometimes running Republic stories. Sorry, but the Republic orphaned the Citizen and is now running with the Star. You probably don’t want to be promoting your competitor. I don’t see your site’s stories going on their site. Just the Star’s.

    • Andy Morales

Actually, Tucsoncitizen.com and azcentral (Arizona Republic) are part of the Gannett family.

The Star is a Lee Enterprise operation.

The Republic uses AP stories..hence the use of Star material that they have to pay for.

      It’s confusing but true.

So, that is why your newspaper up north has Star material.

Our stuff appears at MaxPreps and various other outlets but that doesn’t mean we are “teamed” up – it just means we share as a courtesy.
