Salpointe Senior Joe Serrano selected
Elite high school baseball players from Arizona were invited to try out for the Cincinnati Reds showcase team on June 12 – a team that saw 21 of its 28 players from last summer get drafted.
According to the developers of the program, the process began with an invitation to a tryout and invitations are sent based upon recommendations made to those MLB scouts in charge of one of the eight teams. The process to make it on an Area Code Baseball roster is difficult, but it is a rewarding experience. There are approximately 3,000 invitations mailed out each year, and a total of approximately 200 players are selected.
“Our son is a fifth generation native Tucsonan that has the potential to make his dream come true playing baseball,” Nathan Serrano told me in an email.
This is what ESPN Rise had to say about Serrano:
“Serrano showed off a short, compact swing, but it was his in-game triple that wowed everyone in attendance. Although he ran just a 7.19 in the 60-yard dash, the number did not translate to the game. He ran extremely well on the base paths.”
