The Salpointe girls captured their eighth state championship with a commanding 5-0 sweep of Xavier Thursday afternoon in Glendale.

Perri Touché has coached the Lady Lancers to their last six titles including ones from the last three years in a row. The girls remained undefeated this year, a 20-0 mark if you include Desert Vista’s forfeit at the end of the regular season. The record also included an earlier victory over Xavier.

Desert Vista’s forfeit may have prevented Salpointe from going into the tournament as the top seed over Xavier but their sweep of Xavier proved the power point computers wrong.

The Salpointe boys finished their championship year off 19-1 including a sweep of Brophy.

Each victory over their rival came in with a 5-4 score but a win is a win for coach John Condes. This is his sixth championship with the boys team since 2004. He also has two titles coaching the girls team.

The Lancers also recorded a championship in 1972.
