The USAV High Performance tournament has approximately 100 teams bringing over 1,000 athletes from across the nation and as far away as China and Peru to play high level youth volleyball games at the Tucson Convention Center.

The selection process for these teams is made through rigorous tryouts with both national and regional teams put together based upon skill set, ability, and age group. The USAV high performance program has been developed to serve as a pipeline for talented volleyball athletes to play at an elite level of competition to further their development in the sport. The finest of the elite are then selected from this pool to compete internationally for the junior national team, and possibly in the future, the Olympics.

The last time this tournament was in Tucson was in 2008 with the Arizona Region claiming gold for the Girls Youth division.

“What a tremendous honor to once again host the HP Championships in Tucson,” said AJ Malis, Director for the Arizona High Performance Volleyball (AZHP) Program.

“Not only is it convenient to be close to home, but it also allows us to showcase the sport we are all so passionate about. Being a native Tucsonan, it also allows me to show off the town I love so much. Our hope is that everyone that comes to Tucson will have great competition and a great experience in our Region,” he added.

Malis has been involved in the coaching aspect of USAV High Performance program for a number of years as either an Arizona coach or a national coach.
