Girls Golf Begins
by Andy Morales on Aug. 30, 2011, under SportsChandler Hamilton senior Kyung Kim is the gold standard in Arizona. She is the defending Division I champion, a tournament she won by 6 strokes.
Cienega senior Jordan Carter shared a piece of the 2010 Division II championship with former Foothills star Laura Jabczenski (now at NAU).

Cienega moved up to D-I this fall which might lead to an eventual match between Carter and Kim.
“My goal is to get better this fall and challenge Kim,” said Carter. “We have the same coach in Phoenix and I know her pretty well.”
Hamilton was so good last year that they dethroned Xavier. Xavier had won the last 12 state titles and 28 of the last 30. That’s “30″ as in 30 years.
Kim will attend USC and Carter will visit Colorado State this Friday.
Carter tells me she loves water skiing and is eager to learn how to ski on snow. She received a lot of college attention after she won the state championship and has spent this past summer playing more golf than she has ever played before.
Cienega “hosted” Ironwood Ridge and Catalina Foothills Tuesday evening at El Conquistador in Oro Valley.
The Bobcats home course is usually Del Lago in Vail but the greens froze this past winter and they are not ready for the season.
El Conquistador is a lengthy walking course that has the potential to test a player’s ability to walk from one hole to the next rather than focusing on the actual game itself.
It is also not parent, spectator or media friendly with their anti-cart policy but that’s a story for another day.
Cienega brought Carter, Kirsti Grau, Belle Rivera, Brittney Makar and Julia Johnston. Grau is on the Southern Arizona and state watch list and a member of our Tucsoncitizen.com team as a student-intern at Cienega.
Ironwood Ridge came with Adrianna Grijalva, Torrey Browning, Kenzie Rogers, Sydney Colwill and Amanda Madlangbayan.
Grijalva is a local standout who took the top spot in this tournament because Ellen Springs is mourning the loss of her aunt.
I, for one, took a double-take when I saw the name of freshman “Torrey Browning” on the Ironwood Ridge lineup card. Her name is remarkably similar to that of former Nighthawk tennis champion “Torrie Browning.”
Torrie went on to play at Wichita State and is currently coaching at Norfolk State.
Shireen Singh enters as Jabczenski’s replacement as the leader of the Foothills girls. Singh, like Grau, is on everyone’s watch list. Abby Herz, Paige Valles, Stephanie Kay and Teagan Fail made up the rest of the Foothills team.
Cienega came out on top with team score of 181 and Singh won the individual by 3 shots. Carter, Grau, Grijalva and Singh picked up one of their qualifying scores for state. Each player in Arizona will have potentially 14 chances to pick up qualifying scores, 9 matches and 5 invitationals.
