2011-12 SOUTHERN ARIZONA GOLF ALL-STARS

by on Nov. 13, 2011, under Sports

Krystal Quihuis, Salpointe

This is always difficult.

Consistency or champion? That is always an issue when selecting a golfer of the year.

Why not both?

Krystal Quihuis cruised to an individual championship and helped take Salpointe to their first-ever state championship in golf. All CDO freshman Morgan Messick did was finish with the best stroke average and finish highest from Southern Arizona in all the invitationals she entered.

Who knows? Had the state championship taken place a week later then maybe Messick wins or someone entirely different takes it. That is where consistency comes in and that is the game of golf.

The same can be said for the boys.

Logan France was the most consistent performer this year, week after week, but we almost forget that Jaime Waltmire almost won it all last year.

The CDO pair helped give the Dorados a 26 stroke cushion and a team championship but someone had to win

Jaime Waltmire, Canyon del Oro

state as an individual. France was ahead by two strokes after day one but Waltmire came back to claim the title after day two in a three-hole a playoff with Kale Davidson of Cactus.

Yes, why not consistency and champion?

Also, I can go as deep as I want on my teams and seven looked to be a nice number after looking at all the data.

Michele Murphy is my coach of the year for the girls because she led Salpointe to the state championship after years and years of trying to get there. John Farbarik took Canyon del Oro to another state title and, if he does decide to retire, then he will be going out on top as the coach of the year for the boys.

Jordan Carter and Kirsti Grau hold the other honors as D-I golfers of the year in the most difficult division in the state. Anthony Moncada of Tucson and Tyler Cooper of Rincon are the top D-I golfers for the boys.

An interesting note is that Ironwood Ridge competes in D-I for boys and D-II for girls.

The girls selections, I would have to say, were much more difficult to make. The parity there is tremendous and

almost any of them can be switched.

The boys, however, almost always separate themselves by the end of the year into pretty accurate divisions of talent, with a few difficult decisions thrown in.

The list will be completed after spring golf takes place for D-III. (Ajo, Benson, Bisbee, Desert Christian,
Duncan, Empire, Immaculate Heart and Pusch Ridge).

If I missed anyone, I apologize.
