Douglas started things off with 3-0 victory over Cactus in a Division III match at Tucson High.
Douglas had a 12 to 2 shot advantage over Cactus in the first half but they could not find the net. Cactus came out after the break and took the first two shots of the half.
Their first shot was a one-on-one that Douglas goalie Rene Moran stuffed and the next was a shot by Chris Morales that hit the right post and glanced off. It looked like Cactus was changing momentum but then came a corner kick for Douglas.
Ramon Romo kicked to a crashing Javier Buelna and he netted the ball to put Douglas up 1-0 in the 48th minute.
There was a 10-minute injury break after Cactus player CJ Buze went down in the 54th minute but the break did not slow down Douglas.
Miguel Gonzalez scored on an unassisted goal in the 59th minute and then Kirt Cormier followed with his own unassisted goal a minute later.
The 8 seed Bulldogs will now travel to 2 seed Northwest Christian on Saturday at 2 pm.
________
Catalina Foothills came out strong in their D-II match against Independence and put the game away in the first half.
Forrest Breeding scored on an assist from Rodrigo Cordeiro in the 15th minute and the game was on. Cordeiro scored an unassisted goal from the right side after a goalie change due to an injury to put Foothills up 2-0 in the 31st minute.
Cordeiro then gave an assist to Justen Glad in the 32nd minute and then assisted Matt Walker two minutes later to put the Falcons up 4-0 at the half.
Tyler Rice scored in the 42nd minute on an assist from Jack Ferguson and then Glad finished the scoring on an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute to give Foothills the 6-0 victory.
Foothills came in with a 6 seed and needed 14 seed Washington to upset 3 seed Marcos de Niza if they had a shot to host the second round. It almost happened as Marcos de Niza won their match 3-2 with PKs after two overtimes.
That means the Falcons will travel to Marcos de Niza on Saturday at 2 pm.
________
Salpointe beat South Mountain 6-1 in D-II action to move to the second round where they will travel to 4 seed Greenway on Saturday at 2pm. TJ Hope recorded a hat trick for the Lancers.
_________
Nogales made it a sweep in D-II by defeating Glendale 4-2. The 8 seed Apaches must travel to top seed Apollo on Saturday at 2 pm as their reward.
_________
D-III Palo Verde provided the upset of the night as the 13 seed Titans beat 4 seed Williams Field 3-1. They will now play 5 seed Cortez Saturday at 2 pm.
_________
14 seed Catalina was not as lucky in D-III action and they fell to 3 seed Coronado 3-1.
_________
Tucson lost their first round Division-I match against visiting Tolleson 1-0 on an unassisted goal from Ruben Ramirez in the 59th minute.
