Girls soccer playoffs: four teams move on

by on Feb. 01, 2012, under Sports

Jasmine Simmons (13) and Miranda Smith (5) celebrate with Misty Ruiz.

Mountain View fell in Division I action in what became a mixed day for girls soccer.

Ironwood Ridge beat Sahuaro 2-1 in D-II play on two goals scored in the first 11 minutes of the match. Madison McEldowney scored on a cross from Jessica Nelson in the 4th minute and then Liz Fritz scored on a pass from Michelle Busse in 11th minute that split two defenders.

Sahuaro has been the toughest team to beat in the second half of the season. Had they played the first half of their season like they played the second half then they probably could have avoided Ironwood Ridge in the first round.

Sahuaro came out of the half ready to play. A corner kick glanced off of the far post in the 41st minute and the momentum appeared to shift.

Misty Ruiz scored in the 46th minute on an assist from Kathy Fisher to cut the lead down to 2-1. Jasmine Simmons and Anyssa Dagnino continued to apply pressure but they could not find the net for Sahuaro.

Another corner kick hit the far post in the 75th minute and Ironwood Ridge escaped with a hard-fought victory.

The Nighthawks earned the right to play Foothills in second round thanks to a 4-0 victory by Foothills over Liberty in the night game.

The Falcons out shot their opponents 19 to 2 in the match and four different players scored. Cait Myrdal scored on an assist from Jenna Glad in the 13th minute after Liberty standout Courtney Chung scared the team with a shot a minute earlier.

The Foothills defenders would not let Chung shoot again until she hit the post in the 78th minute.

Kendall Karon scored on a long cross from Savanna Schmidt with 20 seconds left in the first half to put Foothills up 2-0 and the match was basically over.

Schmidt scored on a deep shot in front of the goal in the 49th minute and Alexandria Skidmore scored on a penalty kick in the 62nd to end the scoring.

Sabino knocked off Flagstaff in the “upset” of the night. Addison Brown put the Sabercats up 1-0 in the first minute but Flagstaff tied it in the 50th minute.

Sabino went on to win 3-1 in a shootout. Sabino will travel to Arcadia on Saturday and Foothills will host Ironwood Ridge on the same day. Both matches will be played at 2 pm.

Top seed Palo Verde was the only Southern Arizona team to survive D-III action.

Safford, Douglas and Tanque Verde lost but the Titans scored 5 goals to beat NW Christian 5-0.

Darian Williams scored in the 3rd and 16th minute on assists from Kim Hunt to put Palo Verde up 2-0 early. Jasmine Stokes scored two of her own in the second half on assists from Elia Mendoza and Taylor Kruse.

Kruse scored a goal of her own in the 72nd minute on an assist from Alexis Veney to end the scoring. The Titans will host Cortez at 2 pm on Saturday.
