Sabino’s victory UPDATED and Soccer playoff schedule
by Andy Morales on Feb. 02, 2012, under Sports(15) Sabino beat (2) Flagstaff at the defending D-II champion’s home field Wednesday night in a stunning “upset” that caught many people up north off guard apparently.
Addison Brown scored off of a Shannon Shields throw-in barely seconds into the match to give the Sabercats an early (really early) lead but Flagstaff tied it up on a reported 30-yard shot by Teryn Brandel in the 50th minute.
Unfortunately, the game eventually went to penalty kicks to decide the first round winner where Sabino came out on top by netting 3 goals to 1.
The view of how Sabino scored and how Flagstaff did not score in the shootout remained a topic of contention until I saw video of what really went down on the first shot (available on Sabino’s Facebook page).
Sure, technically, Katherine Davison missed her first shot for Flagstaff but it was because Sabino goalie Sylvanna Islas dove to her right and blocked it.
Then, Sierra Heredia put Sabino up 1-0 on a top-shelf shot to the right.
Mattie Wojcik tied it up 1-1 on her shot for Flagstaff. Kelsey Jenkins hit the crossbar on her shot for Sabino but it was credited as a save for some reason. The result, I guess, was the same.
Islas went on to block Flagstaff’s next two shots according to video of the action and Addison and Ashley Ross scored theirs for the win.
