Down 4 to 2 with one out and bases loaded, second baseman Elizabeth Gomez ripped a pitch to the left field corner to clear the bases to put Southwestern ahead for the first time in a Little League softball semifinal game held at Littletown Monday night.

San Xavier pitcher Karla Rivera had pretty much kept Southwestern off the bases to that point with six strikeouts, two hits and two unearned runs give up but a couple of walks and an error in the top of the last inning set the stage for the comeback.

San Xavier scored first on a run by Jasmyn Cocova in the bottom of the first inning and then added another run in the second after Lorena Anaya knocked in Elena Morales (no relation). Cocova scored again the third inning to give San Xavier a commanding 3-0 lead after three innings.

Meanwhile, Rivera had held Southwest to a couple of walks through the first three innings and that was it. Korina Frogozo and Yasmine Galindo broke through with a couple of hits in the top of the fourth against Rivera and both wound up scoring to cut the lead down to 3-2.

Galindo gave up an unearned run the bottom of the fifth to put San Xavier up 4-2 after five innings but she struck out 11 batters in the game including three in the fifth and two in the sixth inning for the victory thanks to the triple by Gomez.

Raquel Williams hit 2-3 for Southwest and Cocova pitched to one batter for San Xavier.

Southwestern faces Sunnyside in the District 12 9-10 Softball championship series beginning tonight in Littletown at 6 pm. Southwestern has to beat Sunnyside twice.

The winner will advance to the 9-10 state tournament slated to begin on Monday, July 16 at Crossroads park in Marana. The winner will also get a first-round bye and will play on Tuesday at 5 pm. Thornydale will play in a first-round game in the tournament.
