Shawn Soelter to Benedictine University
by Andy Morales on Jul. 10, 2012, under SportsSalpointe standout Shawn Soelter is headed to Benedictine University located in Lisle, a suburb of Chicago according to his father Scott.
Scott Soelter gives all the credit to club coach Brian Peabody and his assistant David Thomas for his son’s success in getting to the next level. “Coach Peabody and Coach Thomas, took it upon themselves, unsolicited, to send out a two-page bio piece and a nice letter of recommendation to their list of college coaches that they have amassed over the years.”
Within two weeks Shawn, again he’s a pretty unheralded/unknown player, had no less than 26 offers (there were a total of over 50 time taken responses) from a variety of DII and DIII schools asking him to come to their respective institutions to attend school and play basketball.”
Shawn made our All-Southern Arizona third team and Division II Second Team this past year but could not get much recognition in the print media even though he was second in scoring average for Salpointe, fueled by 86 3-pointers.
“To me this is a remarkable outcome and a true testament to Coach Peabody’s reputation and to Coach Thomas’ commitment to coaching and to his players,” added Scott.
The bottom line is that, because of Coaches Peabody and Thomas, Shawn will be playing college basketball.”
Some of the more recent players the two coaches have sent off this year include: Talbott Denny (Salpointe/Lipscomb), Marcus Mears (Buena/Pima), Cesar Solis (Tohono O’odham), Marc Matthews (Buena/Montana-Billings), Cory Carver (Salpointe/Chandler-Gilbert), Dylan Hildalgo (Rincon/Kansas Wesleyan), Joseph Monreal (Nogales/Pima) and Soelter (Salpointe/Benedictine University).
Former Salpointe big-man Emilio Acedo, Canyon del Oro star Joshua Lewis and Santa Rita/Palo Verde standout Roland Jones have also signed with Pima.
