Jazmin Ayala dominated from the circle and with her bat as the 9-10 Sunnyside All-Stars defeated the Thornydale All-Stars 13-2 in the second round of the Little League State Playoffs held Tuesday night at Crossroads Park in Marana.
Ayala collected six strikeouts on four innings of work and she backed herself up with a solo homerun and two singles with two RBIs. She gave up two unearned runs and only two hits to keep Thornydale off the bases.
Sunnyside jumped up early with seven unearned runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI homerun by Destiny Urquidez, an RBI double by Anacely Gutierrez and a two-RBI triple by Jaylen Marquez.
Sunnyside would add two more runs in the second inning on a two-RBI single by Raeanna Galvez that knocked in Jaden Espinoza and Ayala.
Thornydale got two runs back after Madison Brown and Jordynn Van Der Werf created some confusion while running the bases and scored two runs on one play.
Sunnyside collected three more runs in the third inning and another in the fourth for the victory. They will now play Gilbert on Thursday night. Thornydale will play High Desert on Wednesday night in the elimination bracket.
Rio Rico lost to Gilbert and the team will now play Show Low on Wednesday night.
