Jenna Cray scores a hat trick for Desert Christian
by Andy Morales on Aug. 28, 2012, under SportsThe Desert Christian soccer team only had nine girls on their roster yesterday morning – according to head coach Mark Harting – and the team had to make a 10 am bus ride to Payson this morning with or without more help.
Luckily, another girl had her paperwork cleared at the last moment and Harting made the trip with 10. He called me seven hours later to tell me they had just beat Payson 6-2.
Desert Christian had knocked off Payson with 10 players and no subs and they did it convincingly.
Freshman midfielder Sarah Butler scored in the 7th minute and then junior Jenna Cray scored in the 29th on an assist from junior Juliet Saxton to make it 2-0 Desert Christian.
Payson scored in the 33rd and the first half ended.
Cray scored on an assist from freshman Hannah Bjorgum one minute into the second half and then senior Sara Boice scored on an assist from Bjorgum in the 71st to make it 4-1.
Boice scored again on a Cray assist in the 78th to make it 5-1. Payson scored a late goal to make it 5-2 but Cray put a Boice pass in a few seconds later for the final 6-2 margin.
“I didn’t know what to expect,” said a very happy but obviously tired Harting while the team was driving home. “For them to have the courage to play and win like this is huge for us. We had three freshmen on defense and we out shot Payson 21-8,” he added.
Junior goalie Lexi Rorrer kept Payson off the board with a couple of great saves according Harting.
Desert Christian hosts River Valley this Saturday at 7 pm (Udall).
